Maketu Sept. 2nd. 1856. My dear McLean, Tamati Pikau the Captain of the Maggie called upon me this morning to ask my advice with reference to a letter he has received from Mr. Davis cautioning him not to take the Maggie to Auckland at present and stating as a reason that she is likely to get into trouble with the Euston House Authorities. Tamati is at a loss to understand the 'take' of this caution and assures me that his vessel has not been engaged in any clandestine proceedings which might render her liable to seizure. He has decided on disregarding Mr. Davis' warning trusting to his innocence and your protection against unjust interference. Mr. Davis' communication is a private one and as in the absence of further explanation, it appears to me a strange proceeding on his part as a Govt. Officer, I have thought it right to mention the matter to you privately, leaving it to you to make enquiries should you deem it necessary or desirable. I am my dear McLean, Yours truly, Thos. H. Smith.
