Maketu Tuesday 30th Aug. 1870 My dear Mr McLean Very little news in this part except plenty of Wet Weather - Col.Moule and Capt.Walker past through here yesterday on their way from Opotiki to Tauranga - I am going inland again tomorrow - Mr. Maling (who belongs to Capt.G. Mair's force at present) has taken 5 Hau Hau prisoners 3 men and 2 women. He took them prisoner at Kariri on the Tarawera Lake, and they are now at Kaiteriria, they were trying to work their way through to the Waikato. One of the men is named Hanirau. He is supposed to be the man, that head Te Kooti to Opepe and surprised those unfortunate Troopers - Gapt.G. Mair and his force have gone to Haruini - Capt.Preece is also away with his men - The Telegraph Wire has reached the Waiwhakariti Creek 11 miles from here - Mr.Blake is going to strike all his men off pay for the present, as there are not enough poles for them to go on with - it appears to me, that the contractor is very long over his work - Capt.Heal arrived here last Wednesday having come overland from Napier. He is on his way to Auckland Col.Moule held a Court here last Tuesday - The Natives seem to like him very much - as he is very , when he gives them an answer - I like him very much - and I could serve under him from one year to another I saw a man from Auckland last night, and he tells me that the public are very pleased with your new policy - I am going on to Taupo next week, if I can get Mr.Maling to go with me, and then I will Telegraph to you from that place. Remaining Ever yours sincerely Herbert T. Way
