DISTRIBUTION OF PRIZES. On Friday the 25fch inst., the children attending the public school at Ashton were each presented wjijh a volunie ; as' a ieward for deligencc and attention during the year, The prizes, especially in the upper standards were' handsomely bound volumes, and were given strictly according to merit. Mr Taylor, Chairman, and Mr J. Croy, one of tho Committee were present, and both addressed a few appropriate words to the children. The following were tho first three in each class. . ' , '; Standard YL—Hugh McConnell 1, Peter Shearer 2, Lizzie Crossan and Agnes Bell 3; Standard V.— Lizzie Taylor 1, Thomas Crossan 2, William Protheroe and Sarah Bell 3; Standard IV.—Fanny Stephens 1, Alfred Ashton and Samuel Crpssan 2, James Croy 3 ; Standard 111. —Maggie Brown 1, Jessie Brown-and Julia Ryan 2, William Croy 3 ; Standard ll.—John Croy 1, George Pearce 2, Sarah Stephens 3 ; Standard I. — Christina Taylor 1, Thomas Bell and Sophia Brown 2, Lily Body and William Stephens 3; .Part I. —Christina Shearer 1, David Croy and f Maggie Shearer 2, Lizzie Stephens,3; Part ll.—Edwin Protheroe 1, Ethel Brown 1 and-Harry Small 2, Maggie Ryan 3. ' After' giving three cheers for the teachers, the Committee and the school, the children were dismissed -being each presented with a small bag of lollies.
