Auckland, April 13. As to-irorrow will be the birthday of Sir G. Grey, when he will have reached the age of seventy-nine, the Liberal Association through their Secretary, Mr Jennings, forwarded the following telegram to him to Sydney to-day:—"On behalf of the Auckland Liberal Association I wish you many happy returns of the day, and a safe return to New Zerland m improved health " The names of Sir W. Buller, J. M. Pavgaville, Adam Porter, and J. M. Lennox, are mentioned as those of probable candidates for the Te Aroha sett. The price of bread has been raised from 3d to 3} the 21b loaf. During his stay m Auckland the Hon. P. A. Buckley received a deputation on the .subject of dummyism. He promised to have the matter attended to. It is understood that Mr Buckley came to attend a meeting of the Executive, but as the Governor was absent m Kaipara, and Mr Cadman. had left for the South, he returned again to Wellington. At a meeting m. the Lome street Hall to-night a resolution was passed asking Pastor Birch to stay m Auckland to conduct services here Mr Birch does not seem inclined to stay to preach, as he says, m opposition to the Tabernacle. He held services yesterday m the Choral Hall. In die evening he attempted to address the audience, but appeared to be suffering from severe hoarseness and could only be heard to say that he had lost his yoke. A hymn was sung to give Mr Birch an opportunity to recover, and one of those m the body of the Hall stood up and prayed that Mr Birch's voice might be restored. Mr Birch then came forward and, saying that he was much "better, proceeded with his address, claiming that he had been miraculously cured. New Plymouth, April 13. The petroleum experts are stated co be satisfied with the present indications; strong natural gas is showing itself at a depth of 800 feet, which is always a forerunner of oil, Wellington, April 13. Three stags' heads which have been pre served by H. Browny and offered for sale were seized by the ranger of the Acclimatisation Society, who contended they were game. Browny brought a suit for restitution, and the R.M. gave judgment m his favor for £25 and costs, to be reduced to £2 if the heads were returned m a week. He held the Society were altogether mistaken m their contention. The action was taken by the Society m consequence of many stags being destroyed for the heads, m which an extensive illicit trade is being carried on. Two cases of incendiarism are reported from Palmerstan North. In the first case a quantity of p <per and half a candle were placed m the manger of the stable attached to Brigont's butchery and set fire to, but the fire was discovered and extinguished before any damage was done. At six o'clock the bridge over the Manawatu river was discovered to be on fire. A couple of piles and some other wood work was destroyed. The police are investigating the matter. Blenheim, April 13. Yesterday monijig Charles Redwood's malthouse was destroyed by fire. It Avas caused by a spark from a chimney lodging on the shingle roof. It \v-\s insured for £500 m the National, and reinsured for hall' that sum m the London Lancashire office. Nelson, April 13. The Supreme Court opened this morning before the Chief Justice, who congratulated the Grand Jury on the total absence of crime m the district. There was only one case, Regina v. Fanzelow, for impersonation at the general election. The Grand Jury found no bill. Gkeymouth, April 13. Some fifty ..three of the unemployed, who sent a deputation to wait on the Hon R. Seddon when ho was here last with the object of getting work, have now been informed that a section of the Grey-Hoki-tika railway at the Teremakau will be set apart for them. The unemployed have sent three delegates to make arrangements for the men getting set to work immediately. Dunedin, April 13. The Bankruptcy Court refused the order of discharge of Henry Benjamin, the Judj^e making some strong remarks as to the conduct of his business m its late stages. (Jacobs, his partner, was granted his discharge last week.) Invercaugill, April 13. George Hansen, of Athol, waa thrown from his horse on Sunday and received severe injuries, a nostril being torn across, his cheek and lip split, and his wrist dislocated. John Dodds, a farmer ac Otapiri Gorge* between 50 and 60 years of age, fell dead m a paddock to-day j the cause is supposed to be heart disease. William IT. Mason, fellmonger, Waikiwi, died suddenly tG-day. The weather is still extremely unsettled, and harvesting is at a standstill. Tho annual meeting of the Acclimatisation Society, tonight discussed a very satisfactory state of affairs, the credit on the year's work being £64 4s Bd. Subscriptions amounted to £29 7s ; fishing and coursing licenses, £190 10s ; sales, o,f opossums, £62 10s 6d. The Society^ assets are valued at £-2194 '4s Bd. The deb,ts due are £14 12s lOd. During the year 12,950 trout were liberated, and 223j opossums sold at 5s each.
