During the hearing of a charge of assault heard at the Dunedin Police Court on Saturday, it was stated that the complainant, a small boy, had been chastised by defendant for an offence which he had never com ant ted. Afterwards he had accepted from the defen : dant's wife 4s m silver and a greyhound pup to " settle the affair." After obtaining these, however, he determined to seek redress at ths hands of the law, as well as retaining possession of the 4s and the greyhound pup. Defendant pleaded guilty, but on hearing this evidence the bench said the case would be dismissed. Referring to the complete results of the Novembfr University Examinations, the "Presb" says they are again highly satisfactory as far as Canterbury College is concerned. Of the candidates who presented themselves for examination here twelve per cent have failed, of those from Dunedin twenty-seven per cent, and of those from Auckland forty-four per cent. Of the six senior scolarehips two have come to Canterbury, two to Auckland, and one each to Dunedin and Nelson, whilst the Tinlihe scholarship has again come to Canterbury College. This scolarship has now been awarded five times, and on each occasion a Canterbury student has been the successful candidate. These results show that the local institution has more than held its own as facileprinceps among the affiliated Colleges of the New Zealand University. On Sunday afternoon Bishop Julius delivered an address to trades unionists m the Christchurch Cathedral, which was crowded. He said the tendency of the present pge was.to abandon individualism m favor of socialism. He was a socialist because he was a Christian, and socialism was taught m the New Testament. He did not think that trades unions were sufficient to cure the evils of the present social system, though they had done good m the past despite the fact that their methods had sometimes been faulty. What lay at the root of all the evils of the present system was sin, and no system of socialism, however complete, would bring happiness unless it was accompnnied by righteousness. He feared that the working classes did not bestow sufficient care on their children's trainingl Holloway's Ointment and Pills.—A winter advances and the weather becomes more and more inclement and trying tha earliest evidences of ill health must be immediately checked and removed, or a slight illness may resmfe m a serious malady.
