The Ashburton Guardian. Magna est Veritas et Prævalebit. THURSDAY, AUGUST 20, 1891. THE SCHOOL EXHIBITION.
The Borough- School Committee;; with the headmaster and other teachers of the school, have adopted a very praiseworthy suggestion m deciding to hold an exhibition of the work and some of the recreations of the scjiolar&. ; Short of a regular system of technical; education or Slqjd work .no thing could be more valuable- as;;:th£* means of stirring up iv the children feelings of interest m their school work and m the lessons that are to be learnt from the book of Nature. Anything that will give a relief to the ;&ujl: monotony of the regular school w|rk without interfering with the learning of lessons will be welcomed by scholars and teachers alike, and experience has shown that such exhibitions as that which is to be hekl,at fehe Ashburton school have always had the effect of quickening the children m the reception of instruction. The Committee will find that the effect of the exhibition will be to popularise the school and to make the scholars more than ever anxious to distinguish themselves m the standard lessons. We should be glad to see a general exhibition, open to all the schools m the county, and perhaps that may grow out of the present project. Natural history collections from different localities would show the various features of the country better than any course of set lessons, and the beginning thus made at school would lead to further enquiry being made m after life into the resources and industries of the district, and the best means of developing them. The Committee have wisely fixed the date of the exhibition so as hot to encroach upon school time. Wh would bespeak for the effort the co-operation of parents and all others who would like to see a little brightness infused into what are at present very dull school days.
