At Clnistoltyjrch yesterday, Michael Ford was charged with forging the name of J. T. Ford to a cheque for £15, and with uttering it to P. Sweeney on April 18th. He was committed for trial. There are other charges pf the same nature against the accused, Keatino's Cough: Lozekues cure Coughs, Asthma, Bronchitis, Medipal testimony spates that no other medicine is so (effectual m the euro of those dangerous maladies. The criminal Sf>s»ion of the Supreme Com t' ,t Dunedia is fixed to commence within hree weeks, but so far not a single case has >een set down for hearing. In England the average extent of a single arm is 390 acres; m France 10 acres, t.000,000 owners holding properties of two tores ; while farms of 200 acres arc so few Hat they can be counted on the fingers. In Constantinople the Turkish women are >»gcr to wear the costume of the West, while American women sojourning there are just as sager to wear the Turkish costnnv*.. Eioh :hinks the costume of the other "just too [ovcly for anything." The Board ot Governors of the Canterbury College have negatived, by eight to seven, a motion to delay for two months the carrying nut. of the motion that Mr H. 0. Forbes, • curator of the Museum, should receive the '< option of a year's notice or a year's salary. A peculiar case of illegal sale of game came before the R. M. at Christenurch yesterday. A game dealer had a fine dis- ; play of native game m his shop, with a placard " For exhibition only." It was proved that he sold two grey ducks, and did not take out a license for some days afterwards. The offender, R. G. Warnes, was fined £2 and costs. On Friday evening, the Dobson-Kennedy Company play " The Shaughraun" m the Oddfellows' Hall, Rakaia. We can promise Rakaia playgoers that there is a treat m store for them m the performance of this piece by a very able company, and one the merits of whom large audiences throughout New Zealand have not been slow to recognise. The clock which Mr R. Murray, East street, is making for the Rangiora Borough Council is nearly finished, and will be on view m his shop all this week. It is a very fine piece of workmanship, and we have no doubt it will give as much satisfaction as the Ashburton clock has done. Our clock, we may say, has only varied forty seconds m the last three weeks. John Anderson, sailmaker of the barque Howden, was fined the minimum amount of £25, at Christchurch yesterday, for taking ashore an imported dog not quarantined. He had been ordered by the captain not to allow the dog ashore. The Crown solicitor suggested that the defendant might apply to Government, for a reduction of tke fine. The Bench concurred m the suggestion. Paris is laughing over a joke about an American inventor who is said to have patented an electric corset that is to bring about the reign of morality at once. If one of these articles is pressed by a lover's arm it at once emits a shriek like the whistle of a railway engine; and the inventor claims that he has already married three of his daughters, owins: to the publicity thus thrust upon a backward lover. Mrs Wilkie sustained a serious loss this morning by her well-known bay trap horse being killed upon the railway line. It had «ot out of Mrs Wilkie's premises during the night, and strayed on the line at the NorthEast belt, where it was run into and killed by the empty stock train which goes south tvbout six o'clock on Tuesday mornings. The horse was valued at £15—indeed, Mrs Wilkie refused that sum for it a few days ago. An English hatter told a gentleman lately that he did a considerable Scotch business, chiefly m Edinburgh, and that the smallest hat he ever sent was 6J, or nearly 22in, rising to 23in, 23|in, and 24in. His opinion is that the Scotch" have bigger heads than the English, and much larger than the Irish. He might have added that the Scotch have longer heads also ; hard hats for the Scotch trade are shaped ljin, to l£in. longer than broad, and for the English lin, while for the French they are only Jia to =}m. The post mortem on the Silesian miner, Johann Latos, who slept from September 17 last to January 30, has yielded very important and noteworthy results, amply explaining his long stupor. Deposits of an unknown nature were found surrounding the substance of the spinal cord, but not the sensitive nerves. This explains the fact that the limbs could only be moved with difficulty, whereas the skin remained sensitive, oven to slight irritation such as the prick of a needle. A certain He Drew lady theother day told her help to collect, all the silver and boil it m the copper. The astounded menial—who didn't know that the Passover vyas imminent, when every utensil has to be vigorously scrubbed free from the contamiuatinn of the year—set about the tusk m dazed silence. But when every bit of plate was boiling merrily, Bridget had to relieve her feelings : " Holy mother of Moses !" she exclaimed, " thim Jews, the devils, is so rich that they has .silver soup."—" ikilletin." Our Melbourne correspondent writes: — The 1300 applicants for the fifty-five mallee allotments which were recently thrown open for selection are living proofs of the growing desire for settlement on country lands. There was a similar rush only a '~ew weeks ago, and it is apparent that Parliament should do all m its power to foster this " boom," by providing increased facilities for throwing open land. The question of village settlement is bound to become the most important of all questions before the incoming Parliament, and no end of schemes will no doubt be submitted and discussed. Would it not be worth while for Parliament to offer prize? for public competition with a view to the encouragement of the study of this Australian problem. Men of knowledge and experience would be likely to offer suggsstions of the highest value, and once the proper theory is formulated it will very soon work out m practice. At Guttenberg, a few miles from New York, there is a racing track which has a reputation for all sorts of queer performances. They have a mare there named Gyda, and it has been noticed for some time that when she was at long odds she invariably won, but when favoured m the betting she as invariably lost. On March 28 she performed one of her usual antics, and it was noticed that her jockey when weighing out was 41b heaver than when he weighed m. He was taken to the executive committee's room, where he was stripped and examined ; on him was found a complete electric battery, the cups being contained m a belt with pockets around his waist, and from the battery wires conveyed the current to a spur, which was specially made for ifs work. Insulation was secured by a saddlecloth of iudia rubber, and the whole thing was so well devised that tbe application of the spur to Gyda's side would make her think she was being electrocuted, and induce her to make the best possible time of which she was capable. The boy was severely warned, and the owner of the mare waa ruled off the track. There have been rumours of the use of electric batteries m racing, but this is the first time that the fact has been positively known, at- }eas|k m this i locality. The following simple and touching words (aays the "Otago Daily Times") were uttered by the late Sergeant-Major Bevin to the Rev Mr York after the administration of the solemn sasrament of the Church :—"I am an old soldier, sjr, as you know, perhaps, and there is always an amount of good-fellowship and freemasonry—if I may call it so—among old comrades that is nevpr forgotton m after life. The dangers they go through together make them feel like brothers, am]. I have felt the loss of one old chum after another as I scored their names out of the list off the survivors from that charge, and I know there are still left a few who will so,dly scratch out mine, and ask when will it come fco the;}. 1 turn. Duty is the watchword I learned early, aifd I have always tried to do mine. I have never wantonly or willingly injured any one I have always done the best I could for widow or orphan when I found them deserving and my only trouble now is for my own poor widow and orphans—God bless them. I trust I have led a just and correct life, and that I will be able to meet my Maker without fear. Young soldiers, you know, lead a free and easy life, but they are no wickeder than other young men oujtside the ranks', only their sins arc magnified because the crime of one seems fco tell against the whole regiment. Soldiers'aregenerally thought-little of m tinip of peace, but when, the enemy is m the field they are lpok^d np to. Peace or war, I hope they wjll always do their duty."
