At Chrislchuroh, Geoige Wbitfield, lettercarrier, was committed for trial yesterday on a charge of stealing two letters entrusted to him for delivery. The criminal sitting will open on Monday. The poll for the Westport borough drainage loan of L4OOO, under the Loans to Local Bodies Act was taken on Friday and resulted m the proposal being carried by 78 votes. Two youths, Louis Spedding and Henry Campbell, who were arrested at Dunedin charged with stealing two bicycles the property of Christchurch residents, were committed for trial at Christchurch yesterday. At a meeting of the South Rakaia Road Board called for Thursday evening, there were present Messrs Coster, Stringfellow, and Richards. After passing the pay-sheet, the meeting adjourned till Thursday, August 11 At a meeting of poultry exhibitors held at Wellington, yesterday, it wa« decided to form a New Zealand Poultry Association. Annual championship exhibitions will be held at a different centre each year. Samuel Lamer, aged fifty, manager of the Scandinavian Water Race* St Bathans Dunedin, was found drowned m the dam. It is supposed he fell off the staging. He leaves a widow and six children. The Ashburton Football Club have received an answer from the Tiniaru Club to the effect that they will be pleased to meet the Ashburton team on Saturday, August 20. A real good game should be the result of this match. There will be a meeting of the Committee this evening at eight o'clock. A deputation of unemployed waited on the Mayor of Christchurch yesterday, and stated they wanted work, as many of their num- ! ber were starving, and there were 300 unemployed on the books of the Labor Bureau. The Mayor promised to communicate with Minister of Labor on the matter, and see if anything can be done for them. Mr W. Three brothers, named Mataon, who are labourers by occupation, recently arrived m Melbourne with LlB6, their joint savings. In the Supreme Court, Dunedin on Friday, the rule nisi calling upon the gaoler to show cause why Kennedy Wylie, who waH arrested for not paying costs m a fecent divorce case, was argued.
