Professor Acminius Vambery, the Eastern authority, believes that the Russian expedition in Pamir intends to attack India, and that it is not unlikely that the Afghans and Chinese realise the impending danger. The Professor describes the situation on the Indian frontier as " the approach of tho Muscovite knife to England's throat." Calcutta, September 2. The Indian Government are stnding 5000 troops to the Black Mountain in the Indus Valley, to drive out Hassim Ali. Indian reinforcements are being got ready for Afghanistan. THE RL TSSIAN JEWS. London, September 2. The Colonial Office has informed Sir Saul Samuel, Agent-General for New South Wales, that the statement that thousands of Russian pauper> Jews were preparing to leave for the Australian colonies, is not true. Consequently the Imperial Governmet dp not contemplate taking any action in the matter. THE CAMPANIA. The Campania, a new vessel for the Cunard Steamship Company, has been launched at Goyan, on the Clyde; She has a displacement of 19,000 tojis when loaded, and is nearly as large as the Great Eastern. UNREST IN IRELAND Ireland is beginning to show agrarian unrest, and the evicted tenants are again agitating for reinstatement. THE SALVATION ARMY. General Booth declares that it is too late to attempt to cause a split in the ranks of the Salvation Army. The assets of the army exceed the liabilities by 455,000, including securities, which are valued at £25,000. He says that it is untrue that personally he is a wealthy man, and declares that he lives on one shilling a day. London, Septeml«r 3. General Booth admits that he is up to. his neck in financial difficulty, but he still relies on the public to provide £30,000 a year for " Darkest England." He states that he has already j expended £165,000 on the scheme,! which he believes, once the corner is ; turned, will prove a great business | success. He intends to begin a pawnbrokerage on the Parisian system. He asserts that the secession movement in Canada is of an unimportant character. FIRE ON SHIPBOARD. A fire broke out on board the ship Auchmountain, loading at Greenock for New Zealand ports, and before the flames could be extinguished the vessel was almost completely destroyed. Twenty tons of powder stored in the magazine exploded, and windows for miles around were broken. Fortunately the captain and crew escaped to the Clyde guard»ship before the explosion occurred. BUILDING SOCIETY FAILURES. The suspension of the London and General Bank (Ltd.), a small concern, has puliud (liv-n the LilKautor Permanent Building and Investment Society. ; The Kent and Surrey Building Society, of Woolwich, in which arsenal workers are the chief investors, has failed, owing to the secretary having absconded with £40,000 of the society's funds. THE WORLD'S WHEAT SOPPLY, "The Statist' 3 estimates that the world's supply of wheat for the season is decidedly in excess of last season's supply. LABOR RIOTS. Serious riots have taken place in the salt district in Cheshire, owing to the Unionists refusing to work with free men. The military assisted the police in restoring order. THE GUELPH FUND. London, September 4. The Duke jf Cumberland's agreement respecting the Guelph Fund involves the loss of the entire income of the Queen of Hanover, and the Duke is unable to assist,
