THE VOLUNTEERS.
*— r -.._,_ The returns of the volley and independent firing of the corps in South Canterbury volunteer district for 1892 have been made up and issued, from which we learn that in corps armed with carbineH, the C. Battery, N.Z.A., with a total strength of all ranks amounting to 57, and 45 eligible to fire, were able to send 23 to the range, Bcoring an average in volley firing of 6"02, and in independent firing of 7 11. This corps won the first and only prize, the total amount voted for prize money—£lo os KM. The only other ariiilerv corps in the district is the Timaru Navals, who 73 strong, and with 61 eligible, sent only 25 men, lees than two-thirds, and were therefore 'disqualified. As the average is struck with the total number eligible included, the low figures of 357 and 5*37 respectively are accounted for, although the shooting by the men who did actually fir* may have been of the highest merit. In the rifle-armed corps, Waimate, 49 strong, 42 eligible, sent 34 men to the butts, and averaged 10,52 volley, 11 23 independent, winning the first prize or £9.
