School Committee.

ASHBURTON.

The monthly meeting of the Ashburton Borough School Committee took place last nighc. Present—Messrs W. Craighead (chairman), Barrett, Bean, Braddell, Jones, Meddins, McPh«»rßon and Paul. An apology for Mr Silcock's absence was received. The 'Bank balance was stated at £17. Correspondence from the Board of Education was read,, covering examination report of pupil teachers, salaries for February, and report of election of new members of the Board. The Ariel Bicycle Club asked for a half holiday for the schools for Wednesday next when thtir | meeting in aid of the Queensland floods relief fund wou'd be held. The half holiday was grant, d. The Chairman reported | granting a half holiday for l\st Wednesday for the Swimming Ciub races, and hib action was approved of. Mr William Dickie, Wakanui School, applied for the use of a room at the B trough School for a drawing class for teachers on Saturdays. Consideration of the application was held over for a month, Messrs Bairetc and Meddins weto appointed a visiting Committee for the mouth. Tne head-masters report for the month was read and adopted. It (stated that there were on the roli, boys, 291; girls, 260 ; total, 551; highest, attendance, 490 ; btrict average 464. The visiting committee reported that sundry repairs had been attended to and that the poich at the infint school urgently required enlargement. It was decided to apply to the Board for a vote to cover the cost of the work, and also to dr*w the attention of the Boar'l to the necessity for removing the old room in the main school buildings which had become unhealthy and insanitary, and rebuilding Another class room inks place. Also to the fact that the tank and pump ia front, of main entrance required removal and that a verandah should be erected over the doors. Several small accounts were passed for payment j and the Committee adjourned.
