CHINA AND THE PAMIRS.
Hong Kong, March 9. China will stoutly dispute Bnssian claims to the Pamir. The Ohinese are clamouring for the execution of Hung Kung, who, when ambassador to Russia, agreed to the treaty by which a portion of the Pamirs was ceded to Russia. Hie Empress is protecting him against the populace. EARTHQUAKE. New Yowk, March 9. A severe shock of earthquake was experienced in the city to-day. Very little damage was done to property, but the shock occasioned considerable fright among the people. NO MONOPOLY. W ashing ton, March 9. President Cleveland refused the reappointment of democratic supporters, who formerly held office, as he believed in giving others a chance. HAWAII. Washington, March 10. President Cleveland has sent a message to the Senate withdrawing the treaty for the annexation of Hawaii. It is believed that he is in favor of inquiry before taking any further steps in the matter. The Government at Honolulu refused to allow H.M.S. Garnet to land marines, though the British residents there requested the captain to do so. DIPLOMATIC. Mr Bayard will be appointed American Minister in England. FINANCE. Mr Carlyle, the new Secretary to the Treasury, pending the raising of a loan has sanctioned the use of twenty millions of gold reserve hitherto untouched.
