LIVE STOCK MARKET.
Messrs Friedlander Bros, report upon the live stock market for the week ending July 5, as follows:—The entry of stock at the Ashburton yards on Tuesday last was only a, small one, consisting of 2845 sheep and 27 head of cattle. The attendance was moderate, and bidding spiritless as a rule. Two pens of crossbred ewes and four pens of hardly finished merino wetbers were the only occupants of the fat pens. We offered a splendid line of 403 freezers on account of Mr D. Brick. These sheep were much admired for their quality and size, but the best offer, we could get was 18s, and this being below owner's value, we were obliged to pass them. A few lines of lambs offered seemed to meet with livelier competition than has ruled for some few sales past, and were mostly sold at from 10s to lls, smaller sorts to 8s lOd. A line of two-tooth crossbreds sold at 13« lid; old merino ewes in lamb from 4s 3d to 5s 6d, and better sorts up to 7s 6d.' Only a few crossbred ewes in lamb were sent forward, and sold at from | 12a 4d to 12s 6d. Our entries for the day | were 911 sheep *nd 12 head of cattle. Messrs Miiea and Co., Limited, per E. W. Hanmar, auctioneer, report on the weekly stock sale held at the Ashburton yards on Tuesday, July 4, as follows:—A further decline in numbers was exhibited at Tuesday's market, the entry proving the smallest collected during the present season, and totalling 2839 sheep and 27 head of cattle. Of this number we were favored with 1014 sheep, on account of various owners. With one exception the whole of the yarding consisted of store sheep, for which last week's quotations were not maintained, and several lots were held over for future disposal. Six pens comprised the yarding in the butchers section, crossbred* Belling at 12s 6d, and merino wethers at 9s Id. The only line of freezers to hand met with fair competition up to 18s Jd, at which figure they were withdrawn, Good crossbr«|s for turnip feeding sold in buyers' favor at 13s lid, and crossbred lambs at 8s lOd and 10s up to lls each. Crossbred ewes of various ages in lamb sold at 12s 44 and 13a 3d, and merinos of doubtful age from 4s 3d to 5s 3d, whilst we obtained 7s 6d for ewes with fair mouthi. Our sales were—lll second cross lambs at 9s 6d; 130 first cross lambs at 10s 9d; 291 merinos ewes, in lamb, at 7s 6d; 100 orossbred lambs at 9s lid ; 50 crossbred lambs at 10s ; °71 crossbred lambs at 9s 6d. A mis* j cellaneous collection of young cattle and i cows in calf was penned in the cattle yards, beef sorts not being represented. Fair sales were made at up to £6 per head. My entry comprised 600 sheep *nd 7 head of cattle. My principal sales were as follow- : -22 fat merino wethers, 93 Id j 23 fat iy <inos, 9s Id ; 45 fat merinos, 9s I fat lam ». 13* 6d ; 137 two-tooth crossbred wethers, 13s Hd ; 136 mt rino ewes in lamb, ss; 36 crossbred ewes in lamb, 13s 3d; etc; In cattle I sold 1 springer, £4 17s 6d; 1 cow, £6; 2 calves, £2j etc, I have sold privately during the week, 259 orossbred two-tooth wethers, 14s 4dt sfiQ crossbred ewes in lamb, 15s 6d; 300 merino %es, Ss | 200 merino ewes, 7s 6i ; 150 merino ewes, 6V,| V Hinds Sale—On Monday July S, the usual monthly sale at the Hinds took place, there was only a small yarding of sheep and cattle, but all lots changed hands at satisfactory prices. HORSE Market.— On Saturday J held my usual weekly sale of horses. The estry wa» small, and for the description on offer the demand was still smaller, caused by the faot that there was not a first class draught horse in the Arcade on that date. Had there been, I am confident I could have disposed of several at satisfactory va;lu s. It is my intention to hold a horse fair about; the first week in August, at which I shall endeavour to have several outside buyers. Owners, therefore, will do well to, bear t>h*s in mind, and "forward." their horses in the best condition possible.
