Messrs Friedlander Bros, report upon the lire stock market for the week end" ing July 19 as follows:—The fine weather had the effect of bringing a good attendance to the Ash burton yards on Tuesday last, but the entry was r>ne of the smallest for weeks past, only 2222 sheep, 24 head of cattle, and 20 pigs being yarded. There seemed to be a fair enquiry far good sorts: of hoggets and breeding ewes, but freezing sheep did not meet with a good market. The butchers' pens were but sparsely filled, and the few crossbreda entered sold at extremely high rates, taking quality into consideration. Besides these there were only three or four pens of merinos of questionable quality,, and aa butchers had to have their week'« supply, these also sold well. In butchers' pens, crosabreds realised 13s 9d, 17s Id, and 17h 3d; merino wethers up to 9s. In stores, several small lines of merino ewes,, in l»mb, were entered, and sold at from 5s 8d to 5s lOd for old ewes, and 8s 3d to 8s 6d for better sorts* Hoggets, for which there was good enquiry, Bold at; from 9s lid to lls, and were not of a specially good quality. A line of 100 forward conditioned crossbred two tooths sold at from 14s lOd to 15s, and wer« divided among the butchers. Merino wethers realised 5s 6d. A small line of crossbred two-tooth ewes, in lamb, were sold at 15s 9d, and a pen or two of old sheep of the same breed were withdrawn. A line of 360 freezers we withdrew at 178, but placed immediately after the salo at 17s 6d. In pigs we had the whole of the entry, consisting of 20 small weaners, whioh sold at from 5a 6d to Ba. Beelc cattle were only represented by a small entry, which realised full market rates, nothing of superior quality being sent forward. Cows sold at from £6 10s t« £6 15s, and springers up to £7. Young cattle were in strong demand, and realised big prices We have sold privately during the week, on account of various clients, 651 freezers at I^3, 908 at 16s 6d, 2000 at 17s. These pricqe, taking .he market for storo sheep four or five months ago into consideration, do not leave any margin foir the grazier.
