ASHBDRTON. I The monthly meeting of the Ashbkrton School Committee was hold last evening. Present:—Messrs Bean (chairman), Braddell, MePherson, Craighead, Jones, Meddins, Paul, Si [cock and Grp.enrlale, 1-'INANC% The Chairman reported the credit balance :j at the bank to be £18 18s Id. ]fKADMASTMiI's KJSPORT. The headmaster's report was read- The attendance for the month ending September 15 was—On roll: boys, 279; girls, 251; highest daily attendance, boys, 253 ; girls, 208; strict average, boy 3, 227 ; girls, 190. The attendance since the examination had improved. The school was examined on August 28 and two following days, and notwithstanding the measles..opidemio 92-7 per cent, of the children presented in standards passed. The master asked the Committee to apply to the Board of Education for sixteen daily registers and one globe. The teachers have requostod me to apply to the committee for permission to make a tennis court at the end of the girls' playground. The master also recommended the committee to ask the Board to appoint someone in the place of Miss Alcorn, who had resigned.—The matter was left in the hands .of a sub-committee, The application for a tennis court in the girl's playground was refused, but it was decided to allow a court to be made in the boys' playground. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read from the Board of Education notifying payment to committee's D banking account of teachers' salaries for August; granting Miss E. ! Douglas three months" leave of absence on ] account of ill health ; stating that the Board ] had [instructed the Clerk of Works to inspect the Ashburton school grounds, with a view to reporting upon the sanitary arrangements ; the question of painting the school had been deferred owing to want of funds; forwarding specimens of cocoa in several stages of manufacture, with a book of ex-, planation, supplied by Cadbury and Co., for the purpose of object lessons. inspector's report. The Board forwarded the inspectors' annual report, with the additional statement that " The report is good indeed, and especially in the unfavorable circumstances under which the school was examined, very creditable to the teachers. The excellence of the infant department deserves particular notice." On Mr Silcock'a motion, seconded Mr Braddell, it was unanimously decided that the Committee express its unbounded satisfaction at the highly favorable result of the examination, and congratulate the teachers on the success of their efforts during the past year. VISITING COMMITTEE'S REPORT, The Visiting Committee's report was' read. It stated that the Clerk of Works had visited the school and condemned the present sanitary arrangements, and would recommend that the Board erect new closets; also that a Committee from the Board had inspected the school buildings, and proposed to shift the caretaker's cottage across the street; to put up a dividing fence and have the girls' closets on one side and the boys' on the other, with a straight open channel running from one street to the other, and a stream of water running through it if the Borough Council have no objection. With regard to the boy 3* closets, the Visiting Commit* cc favored the Clerk's idea to have them shifted to the east side of the ground if the Council object to the urinals being run i<»to ths shingle to a depth of six or eight inches. The macrocarpa tree 3 planted on Arbor day in the school grounds were all dead, but those of a larger kind got from Mr J Porter were in a healthy condition. Several minor matters were dealt with in the report, which was adopted. Messrs Crais;head and Braddell were appointed a Visiting Committee for the ensuing month, and a sub-Committee was appointed to arrange the annual concert. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £5 15a were pissed for payment and the Committee adjourned.
