Supposed Loss of the Barque Evelyn.
Wellington, October 1. The Marine Department received a telegram from Lyfctelton tliis evening stating that the masters of the steamers Rotorua and Wakatipu, which arrived there to-day from Wellington, reported having passed, three miles from Pencarrow Head yesterday, a quantity of wreckage and a boat bearing on her stern the words "Evelyn,. Glasgow." A barque named the Evelyn, of 1135 tons, and commanded by Captain Lowe, left Newcastle fot Lytlelton on September 19, and fchero is but little doubt that the wreckage is from her, A terrific " southerly buster " was experienced in tin Straits on Friday, and it is feared that a casualty happgnad. The pilots, lighthouse-keeper, and signal -station men havj been requested fc^> keep i slurp look out. and search tho beach. Probably a tug will be sent our. Wellington, October 2. Captain Manning, of the Rotorua, states that for two miles the sea was strewed vviih wreckage, consisting of ship's railage, ■\ saxtant case, pillows, cushions, cordage, and a quantity of other woodwork from the upper part of a vessel. Opinion is divided among seafaring men ; soaae think tho vessel merely had her decks swept, others fear she Las foundered. The pilot station reports a large barque seen on Friday making souih, and by one o'clock she was out of sight. The northerly gale was then moderating, but a few hours later cama fierce southerly weather, very thick, and there was no chance of the barque (which would meet the full fury of the storm) getting back into the straits, The pilot crew go out this morning to search the coast from Pencarrow towards Baring Heads,
