Wellington, December 39. A petition was lodged by Mr Edwards this morning, ac'ing on behalf of the petitioners, against the return of Sir Robert Stout, on a number of grounds, alleging generally corrupt and illegal practices. The formal announcement of the poll was made on December 1, and twenty-sight days are allowed by the Act for lodging the petition. The petition was received by post this morning, hut in the returning officer's absence was not opened.
