ATHLETICS.

J (By SPRINTER.) 1 Owing to the action of the SpoTte ' Federation in sanctioning a disqualification, the K.Z. League of Wheelmen com- ' plains that cycling events are being • greatly interfered with in Southland. ' The Taranaki Athletic Association has decided to protest against the, Caledonian ' Society being allowed to hold sports un--1 der the federation, while the Feilding As- ' sociation members have resigned in a \ body because the same society was not : allowed to do so. From this it is evident that Southern societies are in a quandary ' over the matter, but it seems as if we 1 can have too anamy governing bodies. ' Why not leave societies alone, anyway 1 The Eangiriri sports proved a success. • Visiting ■-athletes speak .din tol 1 praise concerning 'the conduct of tho ' fivents- and the machine-like order in which everything was carried out. A • large number of competitors were registered under the rules of the Auckland Province Athletic Association, and some ' of these intend performing at Waihi on ' Ist ifetrch and Te Kuiti on 3rd March. The itinerary programme adopted last year in tihis province has been working well through the present season, and competitors have no justifica-tion for com-; ! plaint. Where circumstances permit 1 sports dates are fixed to follow in such 1 a. way that athletes may journey from 1 place to place with the least possible I inconvenience and expense. A programme is to hand from Te Kuiti, where sports will .be held on tli6 3rd prox., and when a prize list of about \ £ 120 will be disposed of. This includes a silver cup presented by Messrs. Chil--1 cott and Albrechtsen for most points. ' The pedestrian events carry handsome prizes, while the sawing and chopping events are well catered for. The first ' prize for the handicap chop is £20. The sports are being conducted under the rules of the Auckland Province Athletic Association and N.Z. Axemen's Associa- [ .tion. Entries close wibh Mr. Trinnear, ' Te Kuiti, on February 10th. ' The proposed programme of sports for 1 the Auckland celebrations of St. Patrick's J Day contains several interesting items , to which are attached substantial prizes. All diplomatic relations between the ' Amateur Athletic Union of Australasia and the N.Z.A.A.A. have ceased, pending ' instruction's as to procedure. This is the outcome of two amateur bodies in New Zealand claiming to be the governing institution. An impression is growing in local athletic circles that all shades of sporting ' opinions should combine and assist the visitation of the South African athletes. ' It is stated where we have so many small organisations, if professionals helpj ed the amateurs in matters of this kind reciprocal action would probably be forthcoming if professional athletes tour- ' ed the Dominion. Seeing .that the main object of all athletic bodies is much the ! promotion of sport—the mat- : ter is undoubtedly worthy of considsra- ! tion. ! ____________ ; HANDICAPS FOR GROCERS' PICNIC. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. At a meeting to-night of the Council of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic AsI Eociation, a letter was read from Mr. Atack, 1 of Christchurch, suggesting that the chamI pionshtp meeting be carried out at Dunedln by the Otago centre, any profit being put in trust with an independent party for the purpose of assisting to send a New "Zealand team to Brisbane in November.
