WOMAN BURNED TO DEATH.
SYDNEY, January 14. While endeavouring to extinguish an outhreak of fire at their home in Waverley, Mrs. Acertide and daughter -were so severely hurned that both were sent to the hospital, where the former died.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.) What is thought to be an act of attempted incendiarism was committed at an early hour last evening. While passing the saddlery department of the Farmers' Union Trading Co., situatetl on the corner of Nelson and Wyndham Streets, about 9 o'clock last night, a man noticed smoke and flames issuing from the bottom of the building. On investigating be found that a quantity of cotton waste, saturated with kerosene, had been pushed beneath the weatherboards and ignited. The flames were soon stamped out, only slight damage being done. Fortunately the boarding was damp as a result of water collecting beneath the structure, and did not burn i easily. Had this happened a few weeks ago, during the dry spell, there is little doubt that the fire would have secured - firm hold within a few minutes.
