ATTEMPTED ROBBERY.
■ . m OLD LADY ASSAULTED. While waiting for a tramcar at the corner of Owen's Road, Epsom, last evening, an elderly lady, Mrs. Bovnton, residing at Esplanade Road, Mt. Eelen, and her two daughters received unex pected and unwelcome attention from a would-be thief, who attempted to grab the bag from the hand of one of the girls. Mrs. Boynton and her daughters had been to visit a friend, and were occupying a seat at the corner of Owen's Road when a man came along and sat beside them. The man smelled of liquor, and the ladies decided to shift, but on walking on to the road one of the daughters, who was carrying a Indies' bag, suddenly felt the man grab it. A struggle for the bag ensued, Mrs. Boynton holding her daughter, the while the second Miss Boynton screamed for help. The cries were heard by neighbours, but when they appeared the thief bolted into Williamson Road, where he was lost sight of. During the struggle for possession of the bag the assailant struck MrsBoynton, knocking her down. The old lady was attended by Dr. J. Reid, living in the vicinity, but it was found that fortunately she had suffered no injury.
