A CHINESE STEAMER.
WITH CHINESE PASSENGERS. LING NAM AT WELLINGTON. The Chinese steamer Ling Nam, which maintains a passenger and cargo service between Hongkong anel South American ports, arrived at Wellington on Sunday from Chile. She has 4!) first, 97 second, anel 244 third-class passengers, all except two being Chinese or Chinese-Peruvians. Of the 391 passengers not one is for Wellington., Among the passengers are TO aged Chinese who are returning to China. The Chinese in Peru subscribed the funds fo pay the fares of these old men, who were without means to return to their native land. They arc all Cantonese. A large percentage of the Chinese passengers on the Ling Nam are in comfortable circumstances, and are making a holiday trip to China. There are 30 Chinese women and 70 Chinese children among the passengers. Many of the children are being sent to China merely for their education, and will subsequently return to South America. The Ling Nam brought 40 tons of nitrates for Wellington. She has 650 tons of nitrates for Sydney and 200 tons of general c_rgo for Hongkong. At Wellington the vessel will embark about 20 Chinese and one European for Hongkong. The ship is an oil-fuel burner, and has sufficient fuel to carry her to Sydney.
