THE BAKERS' STRIKE.
CONFERENCE IMPENDING. (Received 9 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. A number of bakers continued operations with scratch teams of operatives, and succeeded in supplying some customers. Several big firms arc quite satisfied that their employees shall commence not earlier than six, but owing to the strike meeting decision operatives are unable to agree to work.for isolated firms.' Mr. J. B. Holme (Commissioner for Conciliation) is consulting with parties to the dispute with a view to effecting a settlement. Meanwhile the union is picketing the bakeries in case any of the operatives are inclined to weaken.— (A. and N.Z. Cable.) A 'CUTE DODGE. SULTANAS IN THE DOUGH. NOT BAKERS THEN! (Received 9.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. The master bakers claim that over 5000 surplus loaves were baked by emergency measures. A 'cute dodge on the part of one of the leading firms was to induce the operatives to put sultanas in the dough, thus they became pastrycooks in lieu of bakers, and outside the ambit of the strike decision.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.)
