TOLL-GATE TO GO.
HEATHCOTE COUNTY'S DECISION. LAST IN SOUTH ISLAND. A motion proposing that the toll-gate at the junction of the Summit road and Dyers Pass roa be abolished as from October 31st, 1932, was briefly discussed and afterwards agreed to at last night's meeting of the ileal hcolc County Council. Cr. A. C. W. Williams, in submitting the mot ion, said that he understood that the toll-gate was erected, with the consent of the Council, in .1922. The road lij,d bee" formed largely at the expense of the Public Works Department, and since then the Highways Board had come into existence and the position of motorists had changed and they were subject to special taxation for the upkeep of highways. The Tlcatheote Countv enjoyed the distinction of being the only local body in the South Island to have a toll-gate. Tf the motion were a"reed to it would have the approval of motorists.
Cr. W. Kerr seconded Ihe motion. (Jr. T\ W. Freeman, referring to the toll-"ale, saitl that it was an anacnroiiisin. and a restriction to traffic. The motion was agreed to.
