No Fish With The Chips
Sir, —On several occasions recently 1 have been told by a fish and chip retailer that I cannot buy chips on their own—l must buy fish and chips. 1 would be interested to know whether this is permissible or whether it is a breach of contract. —Yours, etc,. HUNGRY. February 26, 1966. [The district officer of the Department of Industries and Commerce (Mr P. J. Carroll) replies: “It is an offence under the Control of Prices Act for a person to refuse to sell goods unless other goods are also purchased. However, as fish and chips are usually sold as one composite article a prosecution in this instance is unlikely to succeed. If ‘Hungry’ will supply the name of the retailer, Industries and Commerce will investigate the complaint.")
