I am not a professor of phrenology, biology, or any other ology, good, bad, or indifferent. I have not cheek enough for that kind of business, though I should much like to get on in the world, rather than bo eternally carrying my swag on the everlasting Wallaby track. They do tell me that some of these perambulating professors lived amongst the good peeple of this celebrated City of tho Lakes, and “ had them pretty atiffish. ” My boat grins and shakes bis leg when you mention the name of one of these wouldbe professors, who found out that there was corn in Egypit, and enjoyed a short but merry time of it one Christmas here. The landlady, tall and buxom, looked askance at me with suspicion, and, I think, wondered whether I was one of the mysterious brotherhood from my enquiries. “ Swagsman, madam,” said I, “and 1 wish I wasn't.”—“Magsman? what is that?” asked the yet suspicious landlady ; “ I know the travellers who come from Dunedin call themselves bagsmen.” Off she went, and I believe still thinks I represent some eminent firm or another in the soft goods lino. However, my mutton chop was carefully cooked, and my cup) of bohaa properly brewed ; what more could I want? I think I was relating the mania of the people to get more agricultural land opened. A very severe gain of wind broke over Cromwell and its neighborhood on Sunday morning last, between two aril three o’clock. While it lasted, it raged with terrific fury, rendering 6 l 0e p_in iron houses, atleast—an impossibility. The main street was gidatly sheltered by the terrace which runs above t, but on the houses in the outskirts of the torn the wind had full play. However, we hav. heard of no more serious damage occurring tlan the overturning o* outhouses, and accidents of a like kind. Sergeant Cassels, with his usnd alacrity, rose, and went through the town, iij readiness to render assistance in case of acoidnt. I shall be able to report more fully on this claim when the contract is completed, which will be in a very short time. AURORA LINE. Aurora Company.—The result of the washing-up from this claim is considered satisfactory by the shareholders, but I have been unable to ascertain the exact yield. In the next claim, held by D. No. 2 West.—Messrs Shanly and Co. have a quantity of excellent stone at grass, and will be ready for a trial crushing as soon as a favorable opportunity offers. Work has been carried on from the commencement with great perseverance and across the river Clutha, about one mile above Cromwell, for pack-horses and foot-passengers only, in order to connect Quartz-reef Point with the town of Cromwell; and for the purpose, also, of forming a good road from Cromwell to Logantown, Bendigo Gully, via M'Lachlau’s punt; and that tho Town Clerk write to Mr Fraser, M.P.O., requesting him to give the memorial his best support.
