The whole of this day’s sitting was taken up on the Otago Representation Bill, a measure which proposes to reduce the number of seats in the Provincial Council from tlrirty-eight to twenty-four. The debate was resumed on Monday, when an amendment, “That the bill be read that day six months,” was moved by Mr McDermid, but lost on a division. Tiro bill was then read a second time. Mr Haughton moved, “That this Council is of opinion that in consideration of the approach, iug general elections, it is desirable that the franchise should bo placed upon a basis more consistent than the present, with the due representation of the people, and recommends the adoption of Registered Manhood Suffrage.” The hon. gentleman delivered a long mid able speech in support of the motion which was se conded by Mr Millar. In the course of the debate that ensued, Mr Ashcroft m ove d as an amendment that all the words after “ people” in the original motion be struck out. This was agreed to.
