THE MARCH OF INTELLECT.
"Are you engaged, madam?" was the polite query of a "beau" digger to a lady at a recent ball not 100 miles from Cromwell. " Engaged, indeed ! Look at the ring on that linger, young man ! 1 hae been marri't this four year ; an' I didna come here to be insultit." Exit beau, to seek a partner with a less serious engagement. "D'ye ken onything aboot that new-fanglet thing they ca' the telcgrrph, Maister BoJger?" Mr B. kindly explains the method of transmitting messages. Saunders (with astonishment) : " Wool, to think o' that, noo ! I ay thoeht the wires was boss (hollow), an' that was the way n't !"
Miner from Devonshire : " I've hecrd as how the Prince is gettin' over the ' typus.' " Intelligent Miner : "I told you before it was the typhoid fever he had." Miner from Devonshire: "It's all the same. Old Sandy snys because he's a Prince they calls it a big name ; ef it was one of us, it 'ml be 'typus.'" Intelligent Miner : " Sandy be ."' Scene : The Oat and Fiddle Hotel, Bungtown. Boniface, (reading from Ckomwki.i, Argus) : " The Prince of Wales is recovering from his illness." Bovolutionary Miner: "Halloa! Lheerd as how he was cooked." Boniface: "You see it ain't true." B evolutionary Miner : "Well, it' oughter be, and we'd get what we wants." Quiet Party, in the corner: "What's that?" Miner, (turning round fiercely,): "Whoy! a re-pooblic, of course." Quiet Party: "What is a republic ?" Miner : " Whoy, a—the same as Ameriky." Quiet Tarty: "Well, what is that ? What is the meaning of a republic?" Miner: " I ain't a larned cove ; but I knows what we wants ; and if .you've got anything to say, whoy just ■ •" Quiet Party: "Ah! urn!" and exit. This puts me in mind of the Somersetshire rustics: —" I zay, Jem, be you a purtectionist ?" "Ees, Gearge, I be." —"1 zay, Jem, what lie purtectiou?"—Jem (scratching his head): "Why, ye zee, Gearge, I doaut egzaetly knoaw." Uh tempom! Quiz.
