— o — May 2. ( Before E. 11. Carew, Esq. , Judijeand Warden.) Lewis J. Drew, bootmaker. Doctor’s Flat, was summoned at the instance of Sergeant Cassels to answer a charge of carrying on business on the | gold-fields without a license. The defendant | pleaded, not guilty. Sergeant Cassels stated that on Saturday, the 27th April, he visited defendants premises, and found him carrying on business without a license. Defendant told him he did not require a license, as ho only worked at his trade ; ho did not sell goods of any kind. Saw one pair of boots, and a stock of leather, in 1 the shop. —The defendant said he had never of- j fered a pair of boots for sale since coming to the district, nor had he any boots to sell. Was not I in a position to take out a business license ; and j besides, he did not think it right that a man should be taxed for working at his trade. —His Worship said as there was no proof that defendant had disposed of any goods, he would give him the benefit of the doubt and dismiss the information. The defendant was cautioned, however, to provide himself with a business license before attempting to sell goods of any kind. APFIiICATtOXS. Kean and two others, left-hand branch of Lnggate : granted.—Samuel Matter, thirty yards below All Nations waterrace in Adams’ Cully: granted.—Henry Bloxham and party, half-mile east of Kendall's race. Bannockburn. This application was objected to by Young Thing and party, who claimed the ground. Evidence was brought by Mr Wilson, on behalf of the objectors, to prove that Blox j ham had nob marked out the claim in conformity j with the Regulations. The Warden said the j fact of the, clahq being improperly marko 1 out ! was quite suflicieut to put applicant out of Court. The s vino decision had been given over and ovet j again in similar cases. Object ous were lodged by Ah Tie and party ; but on the applicant’s agent (Ah Kew) j stating that there was no intention to interfere with the objectors’water-race, the application j was granted. Dam. —Francis Lyons, Welshman’s Gully, Bendigo : granted. Water Races. Francis Lyons, one sluice-head I from dam in Welshman’s Gully : granted.—W. Kean, eight sluice-heads from left-hand branch of Lnggate Creek: granted.—Alfred M‘Minn and another, one sluicc-hcid from the three | springs half-a mile west of Kawaran Gorge: I granted.—Geo. A. Brown, four sluice-heads from j 14 mile below the township of Bendigo ; no ap- \ pearance.—Thomas Logan and two others, four 1 sluice-heads from the two branches of Bendigo ! Gaily Creek : adjourned till next Court-day.— 1 , Same, for six sluice-heads, out of Bendigo Cully I Creek ; adjourned till next Court-day.
