Mr Lioiaoe Bastings lias been appointed a member of the Executive, as Secretary iuf Gold-uulds and Puniic \\ ovks. H.M.S. Dido arrived in Port Chalmers on Saturday. At the HacoH (St.. Andrew's Day): the following w.re the results: Hurdla Race, Nigger'; M*id'.m Plate, May Mb'-.n ; S?t, Andrew's Handicap, Wild boy ; Selling Race, St. Andrew; Consolation, Suladin.

POPULAR B:TT32TAINMSNr. The amateur entertainnient given ;it Kidd a Hail on Thursday last, jor the. Imnelit ot lj e Cromwell School, was not ouite so successful as we could have wished it to be. The attendance by no means reached the average heretofore generally present at this class of performance in Cromwell, which may perhaps be accounted for by the fact that hardly so attractive a programme as Usual was issued. Part first consisted of singing and lvcitatio;,;,

Mr Bau'd sang " Early in the Moming,"'as he always sings—really well ; and Mr Robe! c Campbell did justice to l< The Anchors Weighed," suigirig with feeling and expression, and therefor receiving an encore. One or two part songs were also sung. The feature of the evening was decidedly Miss M. Baird's recitation of "Mary, Queen of Scots," which she rendered with much feeling and "sweetness," if we may use such a term. A perfect furore of applause greeted her at the finish. Mr Smythies created much amustnient by his rendering of " Daniel i\ Dishclout." This division of the programme was brought to a close by some excellent sinking and dancing by Air .lames Hurley, who promises to become an especial favourite in this line of business. Between the farts, an excellent band, tinder tl-.e lead' rship of Mr W. H. Whctter, ''with sweet nnisic tilled the scn?es" of the audience. The "burlesque tragic opera" of "BombaStes Furioso" followed. We have'always been of the opinion that burlesque acting is beyond the attainments of the ordinary rUn of amateurs, and in tnlth we must sav that on Thursday night we Saw no reason to alter that opinion.
