A Somnambulist. — During the. worst of the recent storin^ anl p\ ih,e"m.iddl_e of the night % TOW in Hey night dress, a,n^ fa.gt asjeep, walked into tlie police station at Newington Butts. After pome little time she awoke, and looking round, was startled in no small degree. The officer then got her to write her name, but, just as she wa^ ah.Oflt to add the address, the Ben from her hand and, she in.to her fanner statq, and ' D.egan wandering about the place. Ultimately sh'a came to," and her mqther was sent for, A Somersbx Verdict.— A verdict was returned at the quarter sessions at Taunton on January 6 which may be catalogued with the Welsh decisions which have now become proverbial. Thomas Parfitt, William Pryor, and Charles Olding were indicted for stealing 1181b. of iron on November 26, and 216^ of' iron on December 2, the prqßwte of Messrs. Fussell and Co,, of Km.* Tsv. T, W. Saunders. pro^e,citte<£ The jury at first found' Cttdmg guilty of stealing the iron, and the other prisoners guilty of drinking the beer purchased by the sale of the iron ! Of course such a verdict could not be received, and, after further consideration, all ih,a prisoners were found guilfar, S^n.^ Be^teuqed eachto two m^n^hs' ha,ra T^9 BgVTTIAh' I&BAMIDS" AND THE HiGktlANiißfe. — The Scotsman, in speaking of tne ease with whJi^h $be Egvptia.u 'igvripßid.s ; are ascended, saya a, !ffigMa,n4 keeper of j Lord to anything b^it <^le^garary $.c Bl^k Mov»nt, was ! backed gQ up faster thai* any Ai>ab of the desert, andi 4it, ; Ty?gQHJ I^vbr Identical with Cattle Dia^ASE, — We are informed that a theory i has been started that a formof typhoid fever, of which several examples have occurred during the winter, is the same disQajao a$ Pathological evidence is brOjUght f or\ya,rcl to support the, hjpd^\fsvs. "STaeaPHBNs, q?H« Fenian. — Subscnptions have been oolleoted in America for | the relief of -fche once famous Fenian leader, James Stephens, who is said to be sick and in great poverty in Paris. The Chief Judge in Bankruptcy.— On December 31 it was announced in the Gazette j that James Bacon, Esq., one of the present Commissioners of the London Bankruptcy ; Court, had been choaen by her Majesty to be the Chief Judge in Bankruptcy. I The Mordaunt Divorce Case. — On Jan- ' vary 18 the Judge of the Divorce Court refused an application to fix an early day for the suit of Sir C. Mordaunt, \Bart., against his wife ; it must come, he said, in the regular order. It is complained that, ii Lady Mordaunt is not mad now, the ten mad doctors appointed to inspect her will infallibly drive her out of her senses. The Case of the Duke of Newcastle. — This case again came before the Bankruptcy Court on January 24, and, though taken in open Court, the Chief Judge intimated that the proceedings must be considered strictly private, and that any publication of what occurred would be treated as contempt of court. At the clo3e of the arguments hia Lordship made the adjudication, observing that there was no ground for disputing the act of bankruptcy or the petitioning creditor's debt. The matter, we understand, will now be taken before Lord Justice Giffard. Discovery of a Gang of Coiners and Forgers. —Letters from Mexico state that a counterfeiting and forging establishment has | just been discovered in that city, after years of effectual working, in the creation of all classes of national obligations, stamps, bonds, &c, "which prove so perfect that no ono can tell the genuine from the false." The parties were Taken in the act of work and emission, anl proved to be Germans, the names of their pretended firm being (Jolise, Beoeril, and Hemer. Too Familiar.— As a railway train stopped at Hanna, a station in Indiana, lately, the brakesman thrust his head inside the car door and loudly called " Hanna !" A young lady sitting next the door, probably endowed with the poetio Appellation of Hannah, supposing that the brakesman was addressing her, and shocked at his familiarity on so short an acquaintance, frowned and retorted, "Shut your mouth !" Proposed Act on the Subject qf Appointing Bishops.— We are informed that an attempt wiU bo ina,de hy an influential body of laymen and oiergymen to bring betoro the, coming Parliament an Act which shall hnwt the power of a Minister in tho &r>pomtment of Bishops, by icaktag su<3h appointment absolutely contingent on the tree acceptance ty dean and, chapter of tn e> nqnv, M ea of- the Crown without beingsubject to the penalties of prwmunire. ! The taste in jewellery at present is more quiet than last year. In earrings, for instance, instead of the long pendants so much sought after a short time since, an ilrnost imperceptible ear ornament is now preferred. It consists of a small diamond or a pearl placed at the tip of the eai, looking like a drop of water on a shell, and has a ! very pretty effect. Bonnets are worn in the theatres, with the exception of the French and Italian Opera ; but these, it is true, are now scarcely more than coiffures. Those of white lace are most fashionable, and are merely, as it were, a long fulling of lace, m the midst of which nestlos a flower or a bow of nbbon. A very pretty one lately attracted our -notice. Jewels are much worn on these lace bonnets. Relics of "Robixsox Cucsoe " — Sir David Baxter has presented to the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland tho drinking cup winch belonged fco Alexander Selkirk, and I was with him during his sojourn on the island of Juan Fernandez ; also his sea-chest. The Belgian " Hevuo Numisniatique" mentions that, as comuionts have been made in several journals on the impropiiety of plac- ! ing the head of the Sovereign on postage stamps, destined to be instantly soiled and defaced, the new Belgian stamps are to bear the profile of the Minister of PuM;o Works instead of that of the Sovereign. This is very tender towards the Sovereign, no doubt, but how abwiib rlie feelings of the Minister of Public Works ? On January 1, the day on which the new Act to abolish imprisonment for debt came into force, Mr. Constable, the keeper of [ Whitecross, stvee« Prison, shortly after twelve i o'clock, gave aa many as ninety-four pri- | soners leave to go out of prison. Only forty' one remained in custody on county oouit commitments, penalties, a.ncl orders of paj'ment by magistrates, A person named Barnacles, who had been twenty-seven years a prisoner on an order from the Court of Admiralty, was told to leave the place, ant\ he went out staring about him afte.r LJfc Jang imprisonment, and what beeiun,© of him is not known.
