r |pHIS is a notice that all the pakehaa and I. the Maoris may know that the Kaituna stream (i.e., the lands in that locality) belongs to Ngatiwhakaue, Uenukukopako. Tapuika, Ngatirangiwewehe. [The land on] this river Kaituna has been leased by these tribes to James Foley for a term of twenty years, at a rental of four hundred pounds per annum, one hundred of which was paid on December 14, 1869. It will not be well for any person to dispose of this river Kaituna to any other pakeha after this lease: such a proceeding 1 would amount to a theft. For a like reason it will not be well for any pakelia to pay secretly his money to any other person or tribe, for his money will be wasted and lost, and there will be no flax for Mm ; but oh, pakeha chiefs, be you careful of your money, lest you be deceived by some European fawning for money. His work is telling lies to the Europeans and the Maoris for the purpose of obtaining money for himself. He does not take cognisance of tho wrong, the bad European ; he only thinks of the money he is going to get. What does he care whether the lease comes to nothing or not ? That European does not like either to speak before a hundred men, but he prefers to have only a few persons, to talk with, lest his ways should become known, and lest the owner of the money should become acquainted with the nature of the talk of the hundred men who are the owners of the land, and lest the land should not be obtained^ and consequently he get no money — that is why he t speaks to the few j persons ; so that he may be relieved of a difficulty. Know all Europeans, — we are ourselves the agents for our lands. We are not willing that the man who is in the habit of telling lies should come here. From NGATIWHAKAUE. NGAHURUHURU. WHARETUTU. The boundaries of this leased land are commencing at Waingarara, extending on to X^auhu, thence to the top of Te Maloro, thence to Wa'rakei, thence to Te Tumn, thence to Wsingarara, where it closes.
