A NIGHT OF TERROR.

HOBART, This day. Further news concerning the Tasmanian floods as a result of the torrential rains sliows that the damage is greater than was anticipated. At Invermay, near Launceston, hundres of people have been driven from their homes and many dwellings submerged. The town of Longford is surroundcd by water and rowing boats are plying in the Launceston streets. Heavy damage to crops has occurred. The South Esk river is 52 feet above normal.Roads and railwav hridges have been swept away. Thousands of residents of Launceston and suburbs are homeless. Tliere were many narrow escapcs of drowning and alarms were sounded througliout Saturday night. Tlie city became alive with cars carrying people to safetv. Tho terrors of tho night wero added to hy lieavy rain. The city was in tctal darkness and some people were eompletcly marooned on the tops of houses. Furniture was flonting every where. Potatoes and crops in the Burnia district were washed out and disorganisation of the market is expected. All sailings from Melbourne have been cancelled.
