One Of The Searchers Now Missing
SYDNEY, April 7. Rumour and speculation, but no news, summarises the position yesterday regarding the Soutliern Cross. A search in the Forrest river regiou was fruitless, A report that the 'plane had come down in the neighbourliood of Thurburn Bluff, northv^est of Cambridge Gnlf, gained circulation, and though the report was drbious a search was organised and native parties employed to scour the ccuntrv there and other areas, which are being eombed. Chater was overdue at Derby last night after a search of tlie Port George district. He may have been compelled by magneto trouble to stay at the Mnnja station. Keith Anderson, a former companion of Sftn'th and Ulm, proposes to ieave Richmond to-day in the Westland monoplane ICookooburra to join in the search. He and the missing lcaders were recently involved in litigation regarding the Pacific flight, but they had heen friends for years. Anderson a day or two ago said ho would give anything to go and search for tlie boys. SOME CRUEL RUMOURS. Another close friend of Smith responded; Right.. I'll baek you. Anderson rejoined : I want no money. I would give anything to go So he leaves in the Ivookooburra today, and thus dramatically is given further evidence that true friendship brushes aside all differences in the hour of need. Rumour mongers were busy last n'ght witb cruel stories, all baseless.
One was that the Soutbern Cross rarty were found safo on an island on the north-west eoast. Another stated that three rnen were found inland in a desperate plight and that tho fourth iiad been killed. This may have arisen out of the reported landing at Thurburn Bluff. Later. > Pilot Chater, reported overdue yesterday, arrived baek at Derby late last night. Pilot Wood left Wyndham yesterday and flew to Forrest River, where he learned tliat five parties of natives sent out on Tuesday returned and stated that they had received no news of the fliers. Two large parties have left to search the country west oi' Forrest River. Wood later flew to Thurburn Bluff, where the Southerii C'.Toss was tliought to he, He found that smoke-signals seen were only b-urning- off fires. Captain Holden, 111 the Canberra, arrived at Oodnadatti late last evening froffi Broken Hill.' A third Westralian 'plane from Perth has arrived at Derby. CHATER StlLL MISSING. J An earlier message that Chater has returned to Derby is erroneous. It appears that the Sydney town clerk (Mr Garlaek) received a 'plione message, purporting to come from a teiegraph office, to the effect that Chater had returned, but a wire confirming this has not heen received. Advice from Derby states that Chater is still missing, Tho telephone message evidently was another of the mysterious kind received in the last; few days. Holden, .m the Canberra, has arrived at Alice Springs and is expected at Wyndham to-morrow night. Anderson, in a monoplane, left Richmond for Maree Plane. He.has a range of 1100 miles. Anderson has an excellent knowledge of tlie cbunDy-
