THE RIVER PROBLEM.
"SAFETY FOR ALL."
To the Editor. Sir, — Oue could easily deducc Frorfl your report of the ratepayers' meeting at Clive that those members of the Rivers. Boarcl who expressed themselves there, were fair-mindecl, public spirited gentlemen. whatever their convictions. It would seem from thctr remarlcs that the desire to impartially scrve prevailed general ly with other members. Therefore it will relieve the minds of many apprehensivo dwellers in the threatened area to know that no local body "Pooh Bah" will be able to say, "AVe will or we will not do tliis or that thing," as was greatl.v feared. Also a hope can exist that surreptitious banking and scraped out ditches will not be arrayed against the mighty forces of nature. Ncarly every day world-wide disasters aro reportecl as tlie result of burst banksj caissons, etc. Nature's plan of building Up the very lowest areas with rich washings from the hills has proceedecl from the dawn of the world. Tt is ofen assertea that useful liuman life dates is origin from the first dwellers on reolaimecl rich flats, as the Tigris and Euphrates delta, etc. Therefoi'e, down tlie river ?hould go, not up,_ and in time the Westshore hridge itself would he a siiperfluitv. — I am. etc..
