KAIONE EXPLOSION

RESULT OF THE 1NQUEST. NO EVIDENCE AS TO NATURE OF GAS.
WANGANUI, This day. The inquirv into thc dredge Kaione explosion and dcaths of Messrs Duncan AfcKiniion and Joseph Cable, was concluded to-clav, before Mr J. H. Salmon, S.M. Tlie coroner returned a verdict that Mr Cable died as the rcsult pf an explosion in tlio tunnel of the Kaione, tlie cause of death beiug a fracture of the base of the skull, broken lieck and other injuries. The coroner said tliat lie was uii able, on the evidence, to say wliat gases were responsible for the explosion. He also found that hlr McKinnon died from suffocation, resulting from burns sustained in the same explosion.
