HASTINGS RACES. A fine day for the meeting means much to ail who are interested in racinx and, although fine, the weather was a bit bleak, but a surprising numlcr of people made their way bv foot or in motor car to the racecourse. Tlie majority of the ladies wore fur crats or coats fur-trimmed, and some evon canie with mnckintoshes and '"chubbies," for the weather is a fickle dame at times. Amongst those present were IMr T. M . Lowry, president. and Mrs Lowry, wlio covered her frock with a sealskin coat, and a black hat smartly trimmetl with ribbon was worn. Her daughter, Mrs A. Cliapnian, England, a grey t.iilored suit, small navv blue felt hat, and a lovely set of crossed fox furs. iMrs J. N. Lowry, in a neat eostume of brown check, trimmed with buttons and pockets. brown felt hat and stone marton necklet. Miss F. Falkiner, of Svdney, in a sinoke blne tweed coat and skirt, and felt hat in the same shade. i\Irs H. M. Campbeall wore a black conev fur coat over a grey frock and smart felt. hat. ATiss Elsie Williams. in a silk and wool jnmper suit in eherry red, handsnme deep red suede coat, and dark fawn velour hat. Mrs White Parsons, "Waipukurau, wore navy blue crepe de chine, and lovely Peschaniki fur coat and a saxe viue velour hat, ribbon trimmed. Mrs G. Beatson wore a navy blue frock, navy blue felt hat, ornamented at upturned brim with silver embroidcry ; handsome grey squirrel coat. Mrs Rogers, Havelock North, looked verv smart in a tailored eostume in deep mauve tweed, and a velour felt hat, ribbon trimmed. Mrs F. Faulkner wore blue and a blue hat ribbon trimmed, lilacb coney ceat, with skunk rollar and cuffs. Mrs G. C. Tosswill, in smart model coat of brown, fur trimmed, felt hat in lighter colour with feather mount. ilrs C. Le Lievre, Whakatane, in a sTart English tweed suit with sports Mt hat to tone and lovely white fox furs. Mrs F. Fryer, in navy blue, with grey fur trim, small navy blue felt hat. Mrs Monckton, in a handsome mink fur coat and black satin hat.. Mi's Nat Beamish wore a black and white silk and wool jumper suit, coney cc at with fox fur collar and cuffs; black velvet and silk hat. * * * Miss Platts, Wellington, wore a navv blue crepe de chine frock, black faced cloth coat with grey fur and a f.ark red velour hat. Mrs T. King wore a bright blue silk frock and mole fur coat ; bright blue felt hat. Mrs J. Shand wore a beautiful ring velvet frock, conev fur coat with brown fur collar and cuffs ; brown velour hat with ribbon trimming in fawn colour. Mrs T. Cunningham a smartly tailored coat of navy blue faced cloth, collar and cuffs of 'pulled coney brown felt hat embroidered in Oriental colnurs. Mrs Tod, Waipukurau, wore a light grey tweed eostume navy blue felt hat and handsome set of furs. Mrs E. Newbigin very stylishly coated in black ring velvet with tiny tucks spacing the skirt of the coat ; closc-fitting black felt hat. IMrs H. Yon Dadelszen wore grey, with grey fur coat; grey felt sports hat. Mrs F. Hull, in a smartly tailored coat of Lido blue faced cloth, finely picated at sides, and grey pulled coney collar and cuffs ; Lido blue felt hat, turned up with silver ribbon. Mrs A. Symes wore black and a musquash fur coat; black felt hat. Mrs Nestor, Otane, in a very handsome black coney coat, with black opossum collar and cuffs, and delpk blue velvet hat. Mrs W. McCaw, in a golden brown cloth coat and skirt, fur necklet and felt hat. Miss Joan Landels wore a reseda green tailored coat, and grey felt sports hat. Mrs A. Reid, in a navy crepe de chine frock, and navy blue hat; navy Hue fur-trimmed coat. Mrs T. Morrin, in a black faced cloth coat, fur trimmed, posy in Autumn tints; black felt hat, with 'r.iown feather ornament. Mrs F. Douglas was wearing oue of the new pulled chenille coats with b.are fur, and two-toned felt hat. Miss Jean Nelson wore a grey fur coat over her frock and a saxe blue velour felt hat. Her. daughter," Mrs J. Mason. in a smartly cut black eostume and black hat. Mrs A. Small, in a fur-trimmed coat oi cocoa brown faced cloth hat to match, the crown ornamented with tueks. Mrs R. Nairn, in a jumper suit oi navy blue and grey, with colourful silk scarf and navy blue velour felt hat. Mrs Fox, in a black coat with a trimming of ribbon ; black hat". Mrs Lowry North wore a handsome black coney coat, with collar and cuffs of skunk ; small felt hat, with oirginal trimming round the crown. Miss A. Lowry wore a lovely coat oi Russian fur, and a small black felt hat. Mrs fianders Crosby, wore a musquash fur coat over her navy blue frock ; navy blue felt hat. Miss J. Mrs Stewart, of Napier, in a musquasli fur coat, and black felt hat. Mrs Carlton wore a handsome faced cloth coat in cocoa colour, fur trimmed ; felt hat to match. Mrs Buchanan, Waipawa, wore a blue figured crepe de chine frock, blue felt hat, and grey squirrel fur coat. Mrs McNiven wore a wine coloured frock and furs; black felt bat. Mrs II. Russell wore a smart ensemble in black. and black felt hat. Miss S. Russell, in a tweed eostume oi brown tones, with furs ; brown felt bat. Miss M. Russell, in a beautiful coat oi Russian Peschaniki, and a brown felt. bat, with Oriental emhroidory. Mrs F. Nelson wore navy blue, and ,i black hat. Johnston, in a navy blue faced cloth ensemble, with beautiful furs ; navy blue felt hat. Mrs S. Masterson wore a smartly t.Ylored nut biown tweed eostume and silk scarf; felt hat to match. SECOND DAY . Mrs F. Price of Auckland covered her frock with a nnisquash fur coat, and a brown velour felt hat was worn. Mrs Ziele, of Napier, wore a grey frock and musquash coat ; velour hat, ribbon trimmed. Mrs A. P. Chapman, England, Jooked very stylish in a straiglit line English tweed coat in grey colour, with blue belt and collar, blue felt bat, with two-tono trimming, handsome set of crossed fox furs. Mrs Collins, of Waipawa, in a smart twoed eostume, with buttons and pockets as a tHmming ; felt hat in beige and pink tones; fur necklet. Mrs Gordon Hoare, of Wanganui, in a slate grey eostume, smartly finished; close-fitting black hat and furs. Mrs E. Couper wore a coat of bright marine blue faced cloth, with dark fur trimmings ; felt hat to match. Mrs Thomson, Napier, wore blue and a delph blue velour coat with coney fur trimmings ; felt hat in same coloiir. Mrs Aldrich, senr, Otane, wore a very handsome fur coat over her frock and with it a lido blue felt hat. Mrs C. Aldrich wore a brown fur coat and light felt bat. Mrs J. N Lowry, in one of the new brown strnight-up-and-down tweed coats, with belt and collar of cherry red ; fur necklet and brown felt hat. Mrs- J. S. McLeod wore navy blue. vvith beige vestee and navy blue felt bat. Miss Audrey McLeod, in a stylish brown tweed, and brown felt hat in skull cap design. Mrs J. McDonald. of Ashhurst, wore a bark brown eostume, and felt hat, with handsome furs. Miss R. Scannell. in a neat bright marino blue faced cloth eostume; small | navv blue hat vvith feather mount at one side. Mrs A. "Wellwood, in a black coney scal coat; black bat with ospreys. Mrs Grabam, Olrig, wore a straiglit line tweed coat over her frock and a biscuit felt hat; fur necklet. Miss Ri+ehie, Havelock North, wore -i black velour tailored coat, and black felt hat. Miss G. Hardv, in a light English tweed eostume. smartly finished with pockets and buttons; felt hat in colour to match. * * * Mrs J. Shand, in leaf green faced ciotli coat, with grey squirrel cuffs and collar ; felt hat in same shade, vvith ornament in front. Miss Jessie Rathbonej of Waipawa, wore a very smart toilette of navy Ldue faced cloth, with furs and a navy blue felt hat. Mrs Wylie, Napier, very smartly attired in navy blue faced cloth, with fur ; navy blue hat, vvith feather mount at ono side. Mrs Wood, Waipawa, wore a beautiful fur coat over her frock, and a pink felt hat. Miss Limbrick, Waipawa, wore a musquash fur coat and brown felt hat. Mrs Barrie, of Otane, in a beautiful hlack coat and furs ; black trimmed bat. Mrs Edgecombe, Waipawa, covered her frock with musquash fur coat; navy blue felt hat. Mrs Shepherd wore a beige coat, fur trimmed, and a flame felt hat. Mrs E. Newbigin came in a very stylish toilette of light brown tweed. beautiful fur necklet, and brown felt bat. Mrs 0. Krogh, in a smart Autumn brown velour eoat, fur trimmed, with felt hat to blend. M iss Owen, in a neatly rheeked grev eostume, fur necklet and felt hat to match. Mrs W. Campbell wore a stylish gieen velour eoat, with grey fur, and a small felt hat. Mrs E. Beamish, Whann, wore brown and a fur coat, : brown felt hat. brnided to tone. Mrs 0. Twist, Greenmeadows, wore navy blue and navy blue chenille eoat, fur trimmed ; hat to tone. Miss Twist, in a smart tweed eoat in brown colour; felt hat to tone, and furs. Mrs.Jim Hunter. Porangahau, wore a navy blue frock and tweed coat, furtrimmed ; navy blue felt hat. Mrs W. Ceorgetti, covered her frock with a handsome black conev cont:r small black felt hat, Handed vvith' striped gold and black ribbon Mrs F. King wore a. stylish brown • cloth coat, fur trimmed: brown felt bat. Mrs 0. Haldane, in a smart brown coat wrap, fur trimmed ; brown felt bat.
B1RTHDAY CELEBRATION A very enjoyable afternoon was spent at the residence of Mr W. Heslop, lnst Thursday afternoon, the oceasion being his 84th birthday. Miss F. Heslop, daughter of the housc, acted as h>stess. Tho drawing-room was prettily adorned with vases and bowls of dahlias and Autumn-tiuted foliage. I Mr H. 11 i 1 1 , of Napier, a very lesteemed and oid iriend, proposed the Toast to Mr Heslop, and in a characteristic speecli roferred to his long irieiidship vvith the guest' of honour, uliom he eulogised. Ho asked ^ the guc.sts to join with hiin in drinking* the health of Mr Heslop. Mr Heslop responded with his best thanks and a Itappy littlo speech. Mr Heslop then cut tho beautifully icod birthday ea ko, adorned with the Fnion Jack and ornamented vvith red, white and blue paper frills. Aftenvards tea and choice viands wero served from the waggon. Ylr Heslop is a Maori war veteran, and the guests were greatly interested m some of his early reminiscences. Miss Heslop was wearing a black Jersey silk frock. During the afternoon Sir Andrevv Russell call'-d and congratulated Mr Heslop on attaining his 84th birthday. The guest of honour was tlie recipient of manv beautiful presents. Others present wero Mr and Mrs R. Wellwood, Mrs G. Maddison, Mrs Gilbertson, Miss Gascoyne, Mr and Mrs Kivkpatrick, iMiss Oxenliam, and Messrs G. Roach, Harrison, E. Hall and others. jjj FAREWELL PARTY. Mrs N. Beamish gave a most enjoyablo farewell bridge evening at hcr iiome in Queen street, in honour of Miss Camerou, who is shortly leaving Hastings for tho West Coast, vvhere slie vviil reside. 41ie dravving-room was enhanced with bowls and vases of Autumn flowers and foliage interspersed. Four tables were nicely set out for biiclge and some interesting games ensued. At the conclusion of the evening prizcs were allotted to Mr Evnns, for highest score, and Yliss Lewis won the consolation prize. Supper was servmd in the diningroom, where the table was decoraterl vith choice flowers and ladcn vvith numerous home-made confections. .Mrs N. Beamish wore a, smart mcdel frock of hlack charmeuse and c cordion-plented georgctte, with toucbes of pink. Miss Oameron was prettily frocked m a deep Egyptinn red crepe de chine, trimmed with effective head ornaments. Among those present were; — Mr and Mrs Tom King, Mrs J. Beamish, Miss •Tryce Beamish, Mrs White Parsons, Mr and Ylrs F. King, Mrs Gebbie. the Misses Cousens, Platts. Lewis, Messrs N. Beamish, J. Beamish, Evans and oiliers. ❖ * * WOMEN IN THE THRONG. Mr and Miss Ellingham, of Dannev.rke, are visiting Mount Egmont. Ylrs Shepherd and Miss Shepherd, of Wellington, are visiting Havelock North. Miss Halley, of Hastings, has been un a visit to Wellington. Mrs Barton Hobbs left on Saturdnv for AYellinglon, where she vvill spend ■i sliort holiday. Mrs F. Donnelly, of Havelock North, is visiting her sister, Mrs G. Ttipp, Wellington. Miss Fitzroy, of Havelock North, i& visiting frieiids in Christchurch. Mr and Mrs A. F. Glcnny have left on a visit to England. Yliss Nora Hassall is staying with Miss Graham, in Gisborne. Miss Rona WToxhvard is spending a holidav in Gisboime. Mrs Sydnev Johnston, of Takapau, is a visitor to Wanganui. Mrs W. Tucker, of Whakatu, Mrs R.. Tucker, of Hastings, and the Misses Tucker (3) vvent to Gisborne for the -Tucker-Fleniing wedding. Mrs Hutchison, of Gisborne, attended the Hastings races.
