INCREASING INTEREST
ITVAIP UKUR AU MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS. jCAXDIDATES FOR THE COUNCIL. "With the polling day only a week off, Interest in the forthcoming xnunicipal elections at Waipukurau is increasing steadily, and it is pleasing to note the ciyic spirit so healthy as is the case Jhis year. So far as the Mayoralty is concerncd, the present Mayor, Mr R. McLean, does not face a contest, having been returned unopposed. For tlie six vacancies 011 tlie eouncil, however, there are ten nominations and tbe result of this poll will be awaited with interest. Only four of the old councillors are standing, these being Crs. E. J. Turner, John Warren, iW. Hall and D. B. Ivent. The veteran local bodv representajtive, Mr W. A. Cliambers, is again standing for the council, after being off the scene for a number of years. Thougli to date none of the aspirants for council honours have issued anv statenient, it is well known that there is a sliarp cleavage of opinion amongst the embryo councillors as to whether the old council acted wisely in carrying out the big footpath improvement work h.y day labour instead of by contract. Indications point to tlie new council being very evenly balanced on tbe question as tbe opponents of tlie day labour scheme liave a strong following. Through tlie fact tliat ]\Ir E. A. Gocdger ivas re-elected unopposed for both tbe Napier Harbour Board and tbe Central H.B. Power Board, there will be 110 contest so far as those bodies are concerned. Miss Anderson, tlie sitting member ©n tbe Waipawa Hospital Board for tbe Waipukurau Borough, is opposed to Mr W. G- Brvce, a very strong candidate. A warm question in Waipukurau is tliat of tlie lialf-holiday.
