Cold Snap. A Tvet, cold day was expcri'cnced at Waipukurau yesterday, intermittent rain lalling tboughout tbe day. Rain at Waipawa. After a delightful week of fine, clear days tho weather broke in Waipawa yesterday and heavy rain fell at interyals. The rain brouglit with it a drop in tcmpcrature and it was very cold all day. Snowclad Mountains. The Itualiine mountains, south-east of Waipukurau, have now received their Autumn eover of snow, and present a most pieturesque appearance. Following the snow the tcmpcrature has bhown a most decidcd drop. A Better Takapau. Tlie contract fur ehannelling Sydney street, Takapau, has just bcen completed, and with the grading has made a wonderful improvement to tlio town. Tlie next movo will be tho tar-sealing of the Main street, as it is very exposed and gives riso io dust storms. Appreciation. Prior to leaving for Doyleston, Canterbury, whero ha has heen appointed headma-ster, Mr C. A. Blake, who has heen relieving at the Waipukurau Distriet High School for the past threo months, was met by the seholars of Standard 6 and made the recipient of a fountain pen, an eversharp poeiicil and a silk handerchief. Mr George Dick, of Waipawa, who met with a severe accident some two months ago while riding a motor cycle from Waipawa to Dannevirke, is still an inmate of the Dannevk'ke Hospital. The first niontlily nieeting of the Women's Institute since its formation was held in the supper room at Takapau on Friday afternoon, when there was a large gatherine of nienibers, presided over by Mrs W. The annual nieeting aud smoke concert of tho Takapau lleturned Soldiers' Association was held on Friday night in the Town Hall, and was presided over by Mr N. Tilley. The report and balanee- sheet shoived a very creditable state of affairs, and all Ihe okl officers were re-elecfed, ivith Mr N Tilley presidcnt and ISIr M. J. McKenna lionorary secretary. Among the visitors were Mr A. O. Williams and Airinan Palon. from Waipukurau. The usual toasts were honoured, and a voto of tlianks was tendered to the Takapau Braneh of the Hawke's Bay War Relief Association. "The Show Girl." A new star comes in "The Show Girl," to be prasented at the Waipukurau Theatre to-morrow night. She is a star who slioukl by rights have heen named Venus. However, Aliee White is her name, for whom people will be clamouring in the future. Slie has all the persoiiality and snap usually found in bal.f-a-dozen "its." The story is Iight and airy as a soap bubhle, ahont as irresponsible, and surely oue of the most perfect forms of divertisement that has come this way in a long time. In support is Johnnv Hines in his latest comedv, "The Right Idea." and the sporting comedy. "The Collegians." Coming next Saturday Norma Talmadge in "Tlie Woman Disputed." Reserves at Wood's mtisic depot. Golf at Waipawa. The Waiapwa Golf Club opened its 1929 season on Saturday afternoon, when, there was a good attendance, of playens and visitors at tho new links recently acquired and laid out on the banks of tho river, liear what is known as the breakwater. Tlie captain, Mr F. M. Tickner, cordially welcomed the visitors and trusted that tliey would enioy a good afternoon's p'ay. Kverytliing pointed to the club having a most successful season, as all the old memherfi were very keen and the new mombers, of which there were a good linmber, seemed anxions to emulate them. Ile tlien called on Mrs H. M. Rathbone to drive the first ball and the links were declared open for the season. Tlie new links are pietrresquely situaled a few miles out fiom Waipawa on tho banks of tho Tuki Tuki river, and should prove very popular, as they are liigli and dry and play will be possible even in wet weather, Sad Fatality. At an inquest held at Otawhao into the death of W. S. V. Matliesoii, a lioy who was killcd on Wednesday by a f all of gravel, evidenco was given that tho unexpected fall completely huried the boy and of the subsequent finding of his body after about an hour's search. Medicai evidenco as to eauses of death was also given, the verdict being that deceased was accidentally killed while cngaged in work in tlie metal pit, the causo of death being concussion of tlie brain and asphyxiation through being huried by the earth. Tlie funeral of tlie lad was one of the largest ever seon in this district. The funeral service was read by ihe Rev. Dunean at the Norsewood Oemetery, a short service having first taken place at the residence of Mr and Mrs Matliesoii The wreaths numhering over (50, were very beautiful, a particularly hnndsome one being inscribed from the Otawhao settlers. Great sympathy is felt for, M and Mrs Matheson and their only remain ing son.
