RADIO SPARKLETS

Up to the end of April 35,880 receiving licenses had been renewed or taken out in the Dominion for the first time following the close of the 1928-29 license year. The total in force at Marcli 31 was 44,810, so the deficiency at the end of the Jrst month of the new year was 8930. This is considered satsifactory when the dilatoriness of many people is taken into account. There is no reason to tbink that any large number of listeners have become bored with wireless as a source of entertainment. * * * A curious condition has been imEosed upon soprano and tenor vocalists y station WRNY, New York. These ertists are required to sing with or- . cbestral • accompaniment or, at any *rate, with accompaniment other than that of the pianoforte alone. The reason given is that a single voice, pspecially a soprano or tenor voice, when imaccompanied or accompanied only bv a pianoforte, does not~ "cottle' orer" well, and is poorlv reproduced from the loudspeaker. Rather than have the station trnnsmissions blamed for what the ongincers consider to he an inherent defect in the rendition, they have taken the somewhat drastic itep mentioned above.-
