Tenders for building 'three small bridges near Hastings are invited by the Hawke's Bay County Council. Particulars can be seen at the County office. Napier Thieves visited the home of Mr A. G. Graharu, manager of Briscoe and Co., at Remuera, Auckland, on Monday, and made a haul of jewellery wcr'T £100. Napier is not the only town making efforts to establish an aeroplane or seaplane base, for Gisborne, where a branch of the Hawke's Bay Aero Club has been formed, is endeavouring to select a suitable site for an aerodrome. Since the proposal was first mooted of making Gisborne an air base, a number of sites have been inspected, and while Major L. M. Isitt was in Gisborne during the week further investigations were made. It is now suggested that the showgrounds should be used. The Rev. A. A request came from a country resident for a catalogue of motor cars and this was quickly c.omplied with. Giving the prospective client just sufficient time to select a likely car, the salesman set off for the farmer's home hot on the trail of business. He had to go some distance out of the township and duly arrived at the farm. The house was well set up on a hill with no road suitahle for a car to negotiate, so he walked the remainder of the distance. On arriving at the door his lip dropped when toki that the farnier had no iutention of buying a car, but that his little boy had written for the catPogud for the purpose of using it in an object lesson at school. The monthly meeting of the Napier Branch Committee of the Hawke's Bay War Relief Association was held yesterday afternoon. The statement of payments and receipts for May was^ placed before the meeting and adopfc-" ed. This showed that the transactions for the month had been as follow :- - Grants to 62 soldiers £159 17s ,5d, grants to three dependents £17, loans co 11 soldiers £337 16s lOd, total £514 14s 3d. Loans refunded by 46 soldiers £468 13s lld, loans refunded on account of other societies £53, total £521 ]3e lld. The committee decided that ten grants, amounting to £55, and one loan, amounting to £5, be made m connection with the applications before the xneetiug. It was also decided to recommend to the provincial execut.ve that two grants, amounting tu £65, and one loan amounting to £25, be made by the association. . A pleasing ceremony took place at the Waipukurau District High School, wlien the presentation of prizes in connection with the recent Anzac Day essays was made. The scholars were lined out in their various classes in tlie front of the school, whilst the IJnioii Jack was flown. Mr A. 0. Williams, president of the Returned Soldiers' Association, said that the Waipukurau branch of the R.S.A. had decided that an annual competition should he held amongst the pupils of the school on similar lines to this year. qyir Lawrence and himself had been gratifyingly surprised at the very hign standard of work that had heen put in to the Anzac Day essays. Strangely enougli th© best work was that by the girls, who, as a matter of fact, had captured all the official prizes. A special prize had, howevei, been awarded to the boy who liad written the best essay amongst the boys. Mr Williams then handed the prizes to the following.— Secondary department : Mavis Gibson 1, Dorothy Shaw 2, Gretchen Moffatt 3. Pnmary department : Jean Fowler 1, Evelyn Hall_ 2, Molly Black 3. Boys' snecial prize, Olifford McLennan. Mr Gavm Black, chairman of the school committee, said that he hoped that the prizes received would always remind the recinients ot what Anzac Day meant. Mr Black expressed keen appreciation of the action of the Returned Soldiers' Association in fostering the essay ldea.
