LONDON, Juue 29. Iri- the secctQd test against South Africa England in the first innings were all' out for 302. The matcli opened sensatioually. • England won the toss and lost three for 18. There were 6000 spectators at Lords, and it was perfect cricketing weather when the mateh commenced. The crowd iucreased' to 30,000 after lunch. The South Africans5 inisfortunes included the absence of Seidle, Taylor and Quinn. On ruedical advice Vincent did not play, owing to a strained leg. Therefore, the visitors lacked two of their best batsmen and two of the best bowlers. Ihe ground was hard and eracked, and the pitcli fast. Killick and Sutcliffe opened confideutly, but Killick was bowled when the score stood at eight, Hammond was well caught on the off side at 18. The -first hall to O'Connor, wlio was having his first test cbance, rebounded from the pad to the wicket. The tptal was unaltered. Sutcliffe retrieved the situation, he and Hendren pluckily adding 93 before Morkel, who had ,taken all the wickets hitherto, bowled Hendren at 117. Tlie South Africans held magnificently, but Sutclilfe was missed at the first slip when 14. Mastering the bowlers, he hit McMillan for a sixer with confidence, recalling his Australian form, though he was never entireiy happy. He hit 11 fours and scored 100 in 170 minutes, savihg a possible coljapse for England, whose innings laste3 240 mi'nutes. Catterall, with an hour remaining, opened for South Africa; with Mitcliell, but was bowled first ball.
