Coventry celebrated tbe graJiting of its birthriglit by a realistic construction of Godiva' s ride, when Muriel Mellerup, in fiesb-coloured tights and long golden liair, rode a white Iiorse tbrougb tbe streets liued witb cbeering people. Muriel Mellerup interviewed after her Godiva ride, says that when sbe showed tbe committee' s invitation to "mum and dad, tbey would not bear of tbe ride, but I explained tbe fee proposed, wbicb I suggested should be given to the hospitals. "I argued tbat as Godiva rode naked tbrougb tbe town to save_ the poor people from beavy taxes, it was little enougb for me to iinpersonate ber, so at lengtb mum and dad agreed, "It was a wonderful experience. Tbe hardest part was to_ keep my eyes downcast and mahitahi a demure expression when tbousands of people wore clappiug and cbeering. "I wasu't at all nervous or embarrassed by all tbose men staring. Why sbould I bave been? I don't tbink any modern girl minds being stared at. "Even tbe sunshine felt a bit chilly, so I was glad there was no rain."
