FIREMEN USE E1GHT MACHINES. DESPERATE FIGTIT AGAINST FLAMES.
WELLINGTON, This day. An outbreak of fire in the building of A. and T. Burt, Ltd., hardware dealcrs, Courtenay Place, on Saturdav night, causcd considerable damage before tho brigado succeeded in gaining conti oi. The fire olready had a good hold when the alarm was given at 6.40 p.m. A very large erowd soon assembled to walch the operations of the brigade, which brought cight rnachines into use. The building is of brick, with an iron roof and two floors. The fire, which evidently started in the packing room, was at its worst at the rear of the building, wliere the work house is situatcd. Tn order to cope with it, the brigade operated largelv from Y7ork street After working for an hour and a lialf tho brigade mannged to suppress the nntbreak and prevent it from spreading to the adjoining buildings. C'onsiderable ..dam.a.ge hy fire... and water was caused, althongh had the stock becn other than hardware more damago would have rcsulted Tho insuranccs are not availablc.
