WATilATE, Last night, Attircd in pyjamas and with his i'eet hare, a madman rau amok in raindrenclied "Waimate in the clead houra of this morning. His capture necessitated desperate means, for lie was a powerfully-built man. He was an inmate of the Waimate Public Hqspital and Avas seen to leave about 2.30 a.m The police were informed and after a long searcli he was discovercd ringing the bell of the Oatholie church. Be-. sides the police severn! others were at-. tracted to the spot by the prolonged" bell ringing, aicl r'ealising that the madman was dangerous they riished him. After a struggle they overpowered him and he was taken to the lock-up. Between the time he escaped from liospital and the ringing of the bell tlie madman encountered- a watchman on tbe C.F.C.A. premises, wbom he chased and fouglit. The watchman was struek on the hcad with his own torch, whicli tlie man grabhed, and would liave been in a bad way had not the man ceascd the assault and suddenly left him. The man, who is aged 23. has been committed to the Sunnyside Mental Hospital.
