With reference to tbe Napier Harbour Board's application for an Order-m-Council regarding tbe proposed dredging of tbe ebannel and inner harbour basin, tbe secretary * of the Marine Department advised yesterday tliat before dealing furtber with tbe matter be desired to know bow it was proposed to deal with tbe problem of sccur undermining the moles and otber struct-ures wbicb may arise from increasing tbe depth of tbe ebannel. Mr J. E. On the motion of Mr W. J. The question of the erosion of tbe sea at Westshore was referred to at tbe meeting of the Napier Harbour Board yesterday, when tbe Hawke's Bay County Council wrote asking the board to give the matter earlv attention. The chairman, Mr A. E. Jull, reported that on Oc.tober 14, 1924, the board by resolution decided to disconfcinue any work in protecting tbe Westshore beac-h, and notifications to tliat effect were forwarded to tbe Marine Department, Raiiway Department, Public Works Department, and H.B. County Council. Mr J. C. Bryant asked if that was still the board's opinion. Mr Jull, "Well, that is tbe legal position. - We are having our land washed away, too. Tbe engineer infonns me that now that the eastern pier is extended tberq will probably be less erosion." Tbe matter tlien dropped. It would appear from a. statement made at tbe Napier Harbour Board's meeting yesterday that the Napier City Council, after many montbs of negotiation has not bad a victory in its _ efforts_ to have removed a brick residence in George's Drive and facing riglit in to Carnell street. It liad been contended by tbe council that tbe residence was erected on- the roadline, and fclie desire of the council to have it removed was in order that when tbe 28aere block, was sub-divided the road would run straight through fi-oni Carnell street to the Taradale road. However, tbe council' s contention has apparently not been upheld; as it was stated by Mr A. E. Jull yesterday, when rererring to tbe subdivision of the 28-acre block, that Ihe house was not now to be removed. He said that in consequence of this the sub-division-al plan of tbe block was in process of being amended. If any proof was ueeded of Napier's interest in that mucii discussecl hook, ''All Quiet on the Western Front." it was amply forthconiiug at the usual fortnightly meeting, reeently held in tlie Trades' Hall, Tennyson street, by the Napier Braneh of the "No Moio "War Movement." The seating capacity ^of tlie Trades Hall was severely taxed, ^■necessitating the use of the annexe to -j^ar-comniodate the large numher of people wlio were anxious to hear a review of this remarkable hook.
