WELLINGTON, This day. Terrific soutlierly winds and liigh seas were encountered in the straits last niglit by the Matangi, engaged on the Weilington-Nelson run. _ The Matangi was en route to Wellington and frequently shipped heavy seas on her after deck, and some empty oil drums were carried over tlie side, part of tlie railing to which they were laslied suffering damage. I11 the viciiiitv of tlie Brothers' fslauds two portlioles 011 the starbosrd side, near the waterline, were smaslied and the water poured tlirough into the second-class bathrooms, portions of the passenger accomniodation being also flooded. Water also found its way into the dining saloon, 011 the main deck. Temporary fepairs were effected and the steamer arrived fi ve hours late. Tlie Ngaio took twelve hours to cross to Picton, instead of the usual four. At oue stace it took her 6| liours to cover 18 miles. The Wahine arrived up to time from Lyttelton, after a rough trip. Tlie iUaori ivas 25 minutes late at Lj'ttclton.
