MAORI HOCKEY

THE TOURNEY AT WAIROA. ' © EXCELLENT SPORT ENJOYpD

(Notes by "Left Wing.")

It was a real pleasure to see the crowd Wliieh rolled Up to the North Clyde gi-ound on August 21 to Watch the Maori hockey tourney. The officials, in conversation after the game, estimated the crowd at between 300 and 400. Mr R. Tutaki, the secretary of the new Tamatu Sub-Association, is to be congratuloted 011 the way in which he ran the tourney, and also on tlie way he and his assistants got the teams on the groiinds. As soon as a game closed the next teams were ivaiting to go on. With as little loss of time as possible. There were four ladies' teams entered, the Lady Ngata Cup being the tfophy at stake. Tlie teartis represented were- Waitoa, Tamatea (2) and Ngatiporou. The games wero very evenly cofitested, and sdme really good hockey was witaessed. CLOSE PEGGING. ' The result was a tie between Wairoa, Tamatea A and Ngatiporau, each team having four points to their credit. Unfortunately rain set in about two o'clock, and it was decided to call the rest" of the games off. Sir A. Ngata addressed tbose assentbled (speaking in MnoH) and explnined tbat it had been decided, seeing that three teams were even, to allow each to hold the f

cup for four montbs in the following oraer Wairoa 1, Tamatea (Hastings) 2, and Ngatiporau 3. It would be competed for next season somewliere about June 21, somewhere in the East Coast. TWO *MEN'S TEAMS. There were two men's teams entered, the trophy at stake being the Te Mangi Cup. The teams represented were Tamatea and Wairoa, the former wittning by a peilalty goal to nil. The L gaffie should have been a draw, as tliere was very little between the two teams. PLAYING OBSTRVCTION. I weuld just like to point out to the teams to avoid playing obstructiOU, which was very much in evidence during the games. Still, there were very few penalised for this. The referees would have been well advised if they had paid more attention to tho advantage rule. In one case a sure goal was given away through the referee ordering a penalty corner.
