THREE MONTHS' SENTENCE IMPOSED. GHt-L'S FOOLISHNESS CONDEIViNED.

IS ELSOls- , ' This day. On a charge of abducting a 16j-year-old girl, Deveillie Tliomas Martin, Ellis Corcoran was sentenced to thrte months' imprisonment witb bard labour. In imposing sentence, Mr T. E. Maunsell, S.M., said, "There is »no doubt that the girl's conduct calls for strong condemnation. It was just about as disgraceful as inexplicable. It is to be hoped that ber experience will prove a lesson to ber, but if it does not then slie is moving towards tbe ruination of her life. "On tbe other Iiand, tbat is no mitigation of accused's offence. The law bas in mind the protection of young girls from their own foolisbness and ignorance." He was satisfied tbat when accused took tbe girl for what he_ called a "joy ride," be had improper intentions towards ber. It was true that be did not gain his objecfc. and liad be done so the magistrate said that he would have dealt witb him much more _ severely. At tbe same time be must impose a sentence as a deterrent to that debased class of men wbo did not consider it a crime to act in such a manner towards young girls. Security for appeal was fixed at £10.
