DIFF1CULTIES ENCOUNTERED. . SUBTERRANEAN RESERVOIR,
WELLINGTON, This day. In eonnection with the driving of the big Tawa Flat tunnel, a xhaft was sunk and lieadings commeneed from this, 111 acldition to the lieadings at the two exits. The nortliern drive of these twe extra lieadings has so far proved fairly good gronnd, hui. going south tlie hill has been so sliaken up by earthquakes of times past that timbering has been necessary right up the face. To adcl to the difficulties a subterranean lnke or reservoir was on Tuosdav night delivering a flow of 20.000 gallons per hour. Three Cameron pumps have proved nnable to lceep the water down and on Wednesday afternoon the water had completely filled the heading. The pumps are working under wntev hufc it is only a question of time when the foofc of the shaft will hp flooded. Tlie grade is oue in 124 and the whole position is made very difficnlt. Underground streams of large dimensions are raro in this kind of work but reservoirs mnch less so. Tt is considered that this is a reservoir. Tf thp present pumps fail tn get the water down extra pumps will be put on.
