BIG TOURNEY AT GISBORNE. HAWKE'S BAY DEFEATED. | Her Prcsa Association. GISBORNE, Last night. The New Zealand ladies' hockey championsliip of 1929 was opened this aiternoon in ideal Springlike weather and in tlie presence of an attendance estimated at between 2500 and 3U00. Three grounds at Childer's road reserve had been allotted to tlie tournament, and for weeks past a staff of workmen had been busv getting the grounds in thorougli condition. The tournament was opened in an imprcssive manner by tlie fourteen teams, lieaded by the City Band, marching in double lines round the ground, eacli tearn being accorded an entliusiastic ovation by the crowd. Tlie parade was lieaded hy Canterbury, last year's cliampions, tlie captain, M. Front, c-arrying the team's mascot, a Jarge imitation lamb, an excellent reprcsentation of "Prime Canterbury." At the conclusion of tlie parade the combined teams assembled in front of the crnwdcd grandstnnd. where the Mayor (Mr D. "W. Coleman) officiallv declared the tournament open. Results: RECTION A. Povcrty Bay A beat South Canterbury, 4 — 2. Rotorua beat Bush, 3 — 2. Ruahine beat Auckland A, 5 — 1. SECTION B. "Wairarapa beat Auckland B, 5 — 1. "Wellington beat Poverty Bay B, 5 — 0. Canterbury beat Hawke's Bay, 4 — 2. Ruahine proved to be too fast for Auckland A and ran the northerners off their iegs, eventually winning by five goals to oue, though the score could easily have been increased had the southerners wished. The Auckland backs and forwards combined well, but' did not have a good goaF hitter, the fonvards' shooting in front of the goal being faulty. For the winners, Miss R. Loader played a brilliant game, notc^iing three goals, wliile Miss McKinnon scored.the other two. Miss Lowe scored for Auckland. in the Canterbury-Hawke's Bay gamo last year's cliampions annexed their first victory in the tournament Ly tlie well deserved margin of four goals to two. For the winners Miss Millichamp was outstanding, and tlie forwards generally sbowed up as a good coinbination. There was not mucli to be done by the backs, but what they did u'as well done. Tlie Hawke's Bay backs played well, but the forwards lacked oombination. Misses Millicliamp (3) and Luke scored for Canterbury. and Misses Cook and Mortensen for Hawke's Bay. Tlie following selectors were" chosen to-night for tlie inter-island match : — North Island : Miss Dawson (Auckland) Messrs I. Scott (Wellington), T. Smale (Poverty Bav). South Island: Messrs M. Thorp (Canterbury). R. Surgenor (Southland), H. Hamilton (Eastern douthland) .
